Ok i have this idea and i need some feedback!
The idea might become a mod for hl1, and iv? started some small time work on it (the idea isn?t complete yet)

the idea:
You realize something isn?t right with the world, everybody looks the same, thinks the same, everybody even has the same voice.
and the world has turn black and white, exept for a really red statue
in the city not far from cityhall.
So you ask around but no one seem to have noticed any changes and then you get it, someone stole the moon! That could be the reason why everything is the way it is, so you start your big search for the moon, who stole it and the reason they had. And ofcourse to get it back.

So you travel around the town and the world, and then travel to some different worlds, one autumn world (brown and orange colors) one dead world (graveyards and stuff like that) and one perfect TV world (you get there trough the TV) and so on.

And if i deside to accualy make this a mod you are going to be able to play it many times over again, there are going to be different maps you get to depending on what you do in the one you are in right now

like this

map:
1
2 2
3 3
4 4 4
5 5 5 5
6 6 6 6
7 7 7 7 7

and so on...

And why didn?t i put this thread in "maps and mods"

Because i just want to talk about the idea with people and i really don?t know if im going to do it. So insted of turning into another one of those mods who never get finished im honest and tell you right the way, im probably not going to do this, hopefully i will...

I'm impressed. This could be the plot for a real game or a movie. (in a way it reminds of the black & white world in Pleasantville)
I think would be very difficult to translate this into a mod though.
I'd like to point out that even though simple and good ideas usually work, the world of videogames doesnt like simple things these days. For example, in a sequence where you are on the street talking to these people who all look the same, you'd have to map the whole street with enough detail so it feels right.
Another thing that I think is a mistake is: having players visit all these completely different locations just because you feel like mapping them. (For example, I take it you want to map the graveyard part because you liked Painkiller, if I'm not mistaking ;) )
This happened in some games like Tomb Raider III, and the levels as a whole felt a bit incoherent. (it's like they said "hey, lets make Lara Croft visit every continent!" just for the heck of it...)

BTW Your idea also reminded me slightly of the story of Momo, I dont know if you've read it/seen the movie. :)

Well thats just the base for the game or mod, the story itself im working on right now and it?s far mor complex. It started out with me just wanting to make a black and white map, the i got the idea for the statue, and then i just thought more about it... And they graveyard idea accualy came from the movie "army of the dead". And the idea about visiting other worlds was from "nightmare before christmas" XD

well, I would work a little more on the basic concept of the story... as you said...

someone stole the moon?

is that some kind of inside joke?

besides that, its good...

You probably would have a problem with the:
"Different every time",
since it would take up a lot of space and time to have maps that someone probably will never play...

Linear games usually make it big, unless you download the maps automatically as you play, and discard old ones...

Good luck :)

I like the black and white bit! ;) Funny idea.

So the way I get it, there will be multiple endings for the mod, cause the player will be able to choose, where to go?
Sounds interesting, the b&w bits sound nice too, but that also sounds like a hell lot of work..
Anyways - the idea is something quite original for a change.. :glad:

it will be awsome to play a mod that has different senarios, I hope it has good old spooky music in it..make it so it scares the shit out of people in some areas like the grave yard.

The plot doesn't make sense, since the moon is gone so are the colors? What is the red statue for. And I think the only way the color thing would be if it was cel shaded.

nice idea, But why the moon?
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-15 07:31:33 UTC Post #147199
It's just a story, dont look for logical explanations. I think the moon is fine. No point in saying "someone stole the pigmentive and reflective properties of materials"
Someone stole the moon sounds better.

It's like if we go to vALVE and say : nice idea, But why Gordon Freeman?

Yea true.

Funny idea, see if you can work it out some more. Doing multiple versions of maps sounds a bit like overkill, some of that could be accomplished using entities (namely global stuff and such). Only for really structural changes in the maps like the city getting ruined or day/night maps an additional map should be made.

Think about it some more and try to find a good solution to this. The idea sounds funky and it may well become a fun thing to play if you manage to pull it off. Good luck!

You won't finish it even if you start your work. I'm pretty sure this won't get into sunlight. Too much work~

Nice idea.
It should work to make a mod out of it?
For what game have you thought of?
Perhaps Source? :D

Why do people bother posting negative thoughts? It seems pointless to me.

Anyways, this sounds like a really neat mod.. reminds me of Fable..

Speaking of which, maybe add a twist where as you go through the plot you can turn out to be evil or good, and in the end there will be a different outcome for each path you choose...

OOH sounds like the makings for a steamy mod..
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-15 14:42:00 UTC Post #147252
Yes i had that idea, you can chose to be evil and kill almost everybody and stop someone else from returning the moon! If i do this it will be for HL1, and if i do this it will take so long to make that i?ll probably get tired of it and stop working =/ And the plot i posted here is much shorter, i figured no one would have the energy to read though a longer post, but thats pretty much the basics of the plot.

Thanks for all the positiv feedback, and some of the negativ, not all negativ posts are meant to be negativ, just critic.

btw, when i have the whole plot i will post it here i think, and anyone with interested could give me a hand with somethings

EDIT: The only bad thing i can think of when/if making this mod is that i will have to cut back on quite a lot of the things i have in mind, the HL1 engine won?t give me a forest full of trees for exampel...

If you think you can't finish this, choose something you think you can finish. Finishing something is a great encouragement, failing at something is often less fun (though good to learn from anyway).

Idea's are often not the problem, working them out is where things often go awry. I wouldn't advise to start something you're not sure of if you can finish it.

Also, don't worry too much about the looks of it, make sure it's playable first. You may get stuck detailing area's too much while there's still a lot of other maps that have to be finished...
Posted 19 years ago2005-11-15 15:32:57 UTC Post #147258
Yes you are right P... And i guess it is better at least try, and this is something i raly wan?t to do so i think i just might be able to finish it if i start, but im till working on the story

EDIT: But this i can tell you at the moment, it ain?t going to be a lot of shooting, so those of you who expect a black and white action filled monster slaughter will not like this. It?s more just walk around and seach for something that you will need in order to get to another place and search for a clue, but it will be shooting, but not a much

EDIT2: And the whole structure is going to be kind of artistic, i call my self a little bit of an artist, i paint a lot, draw a lot and make music, so im going to but a lot of that into the looks of the mod

and just say it one more time, don?t expect me to do it yet
