I have a question regarding humor in a map (most of my maps from now on are going to have some form of humor in them): How much humor can I add to a map before it gets stale and annoying? I like the funny, but I'm afraid other people won't.

Uh, depends on the type of humour.

I'm not talking about sexual humor, but like crazy humor and site gags. For example, you see a sign on the wall that says "Have a problem with excess saliva? No more with Salivaway!" or a note on a door: "Frank, stop leaving your Philly cheesesteaks on my office chair. I keep sitting on them and soiling my lab coat. People keep asking if I have a bad case of diarrhea! - Paul" Heck, even seeing a sci playing his armpit. Stuff like that.

Yeah, go for it! But don't overuse it. 3/4 jokes per map is enough. It all depend on the type of map.

Hiding your jokes and spacing them out would be my answer. I'm sure having to wait for a "funny" sequence to finish before the game progresses would cause people to replay it again, in my opinion. Most games are filled with funny easter eggs rather than constant wackiness. But this is more comedy timing than mapping. :)

i put a few in my hostage situation chapter...

I have a game of 'elite' being played by a scientist and it goes 'all your base are belong to us. game over. do you want to play again?'

I have a document that reads
'this top secret document is top secret so please dont read it if you're a bad guy'

stuff like that is good in small doses. dont overuse it

Games are supposed to be fun, so yeah, a little humor now and then isn't a bad idea. The amount and type depends on your public and your intentions.

Why don't you give it a try, create a map that you think is good fun and ask some others for feedback? Best way to find out. :)

Games definately need humour. Makes the experience a hell of a lot better.

HL was full of humour.

I'll never forget that first train ride...

"Do you have a friend or relative interested in becoming part of the Black Mesa Team? Immediate openings are now in the fields of... materials handelings and... low clearence security."

Yeah, Humour is great in a map...

Always good to have a clever sarcastic or cinical comment made by the loudspeaker...

(Bratty Remembers when Barney is trying to use that cool gun the scientists made... BOOM!)

I'm actually trying to do that with the remake of my first map. No combat, just the funny (although there is some humor in my first map)...for now, anyway. I just wanted to ask so I don't go overboard in my next real map.

I thought the dying scientists were funny!
OMG I'm going to fall Gordon...Ah ah AHHHHHHH

Or the glitchy lift bit where you open the door and three scientists fall to their death on a lift :) The Source version is hilerious! Instead of going AHHH they go ow...

OP4 had that scientist who gets taken to Xen or gets chased while you ride up a lift and laugh.

HL1 had scientist / geek death humor :glad:

In that case, instead of Barney saying "Die you bloodsucker!" he'd say "I fart in your general direction!"

Also keep in mind that a joke is better when more people understand it. Like those newspaper cartoons where noone speaks but there's a clear message.
In mapping for HL, the best jokes would be the ones that have something to do with the game.
If you base your jokes in what YOU think is funny, things can happen like in The Simpsons, when they make jokes about celebrities that people outside the U.S dont know about
Remember that a universal humor product needs a universal joke!

Would something like coming across a newspaper and reading: "Local Bank Hacked! Manager exclaims "OMGWTFBBQ?!?!/1!?" or seeing the G-man on the cover of "Two-Piece Suit Magazine" as universal humor?

Universal Humour is difficult for me...

I enjoy Parody and Satire...

Usually I'm the kind of guy who likes obscure humor, like this, but I'm always afraid people won't get the humor or find it immature.

That kind of non-stop nonsense humor gets annoying in a very short amount of time. You should rather have a few well layed out jokes throughout the map. The element of surprise is of importance as well... and, as Mephs pointed out, timing is essential.

It's been said :

Humor is great, but good timing is the key.

Also, don't be so unsure about your humor, just try it in one of your maps and see how the poeple like it ;)

Well, anyway, you guys know of any funny mods (besides Life's End and the map "The Evil Place") that use humor to an extent?
