ok, everyone through in your ideas!

For me, I think it would be cool if we did 1 highly detailed room!
Judges would be looking for realism.

Well, anyways, tell me what you think about my idea, and shout out yours!

It wasnt such a weird idea.
Due to the lack of participation on that one, next compo will be an easier one. Of couse, "easy" means that you'll have to do well to beat other people's entries.

I like the "detailed" room idea...

although, it would be impossible to justify 1 room...

I suggest a map where the limitations are already in place...

no, not a "Texture, Light it, Play it" thingy... I mean you just lay a basic foundation, and we do something unique with it...

Or, some kind of Terrian one...

Where we have to make the best looking, fitting, terrain.

Could be desert, grassland, plains, hills, cliffs, mesas, etc...

name: Once more with Feeling
Restrictions: the normal stuff
What you have to do: Pick and old compo and make an entry for it.

seeing as there are alot of ones I wanted to enter, but was unable to and/or not here for.

and if not that then something thats a Map from Base compo

How bout pick an old comp entry and Source-ify it as well for the masses who don't fancy HL1 editing anymore.

Speaking of the next compo. Kasperg, did you get my PM about the compo ideas? It's been a couple days since I sent it, so I'm wondering whether you actually recieved it.

I did. All these ideas are very interesting. I was also considering the nature of both games, one being old and the other being new.
Maybe the HL compo could be about doing something familiar (similar to the last 2 HL1 compos) as best as you can, showing that good maps are still possible with the old engine.
For the HL2 compo, something that would allow mappers the chance to explore the new feautures of Source, and make something original. It'd be quite a challenge, as we know that HL2 maps always tend to look HL2ish...

Those are some ideas. A faster competion could consist in connecting two areas of a given map as best as possible. Sort of like a "stairs, ramps and elevators" competition. Keep posting in this thread. I want to see what people think so we dont get 4 entries like in my previous compo. :nuts:

Idea: Dream Sequence (or you could call it "Alternate Dimention" or, heck, even "Acid Trip")

The object is to make a map as strange as you can, like a dream (or nightmare.) Things popping out of walls, floating around in space, scale of rooms all out of proportion, stuff like that. Basically, the goal is to make a map that makes the player go "WTF?"

I personally think this is easy because the mapper can do whatever the heck he wants, although HL's limitations come to mind...

No one noticed what Asinth said, but, how about redoing the Black Mesa Inbound train scene. You dont have to make a modified clone of it, but a train ride would be a neat Idea... I liked all the goofy stuff you can see if you look closely.. I think this would make an excellent competition.

This could lead to bad mapping. Hey, if it's a dream, people could map with bad scale, bad texturing and strange layout and argue that it's all part of the dream world...

Maybe have a factory compo, where you create a production line of something (eg, exsplosive barrels, headcrabs, ammunition) and make it as realistic as possible. If you want you could work on only one specific part of the factory. :)

I personally think a physics type compo would suffice...A physics trap? Domino style machine? A giant ball that rolls into a hole etc...

Perhaps a horror compo...I love scary maps...

ooh, I love that idea.. but instead of everyone being given pictures, how about we get to pick our own pictures of buildings, or spacecrafts, or what ever else there is out there.

Example, you could find a picture of a harley to map, or the twin towers if you want, but you have to make it accurate. Pictures must be included with the entry..

what do you guys think?

I wan?t a psycadelic compo, and that doesn?t involve bad mapping skills, quite the opposit, its very hard to map something psycadelic whithout making it look like a drunk 3year old did it... by accident... Texturing, lights, brushes, it all has to fit so perfect. And besides, most mappers only map "realistic" and "logical" maps so this could turn out to be quite the challange. And psychadelic is not the same as original or a dream sequense. It would take some huge entity work as well as brush work. and with the HL1 limits it would be really hard and very hard to get it done, and get it to look good as well as fun to play.

Put some nice architecture and lightning in the map at the same time. But keep it basic.

Since this wouldn't take so much time, I guess the deadline would be 2 weeks?

I say we do an intro map. Haven't had a competition for that, and it'd be interesting to see what people came up with. Wouldn't necessarily have to be a tram, could be anything.

Just so I don't forget, I've got a better idea than my first one:
  • Contest Name: "We're In The Funny" (or something less lame)
In this contest the mapper tries to create the funniest map he can, with inside jokes, sight gags, and whatever he can fit. Tasteful humor only, though.

Heck, I've got so many ideas...maybe I'll host my own contest...

Dont post specific competition details, because it'll be less likely those will make it to the compo. I'm not going to decide the theme that one person wants. It wouldnt be fair. Just be patient :cyclops:

I think we should keep the source compo basic, powerfull and short.

Like the first hl compo's.
That would be great for the source compo, connect 2 rooms with a stair, ramp or elevator.

and no, it has nothing to do with cliffs and rocks.. but it will be a map made into a story line that leaves you on a cliffhanger...

just a thought :D
