I want to learn how to make CS 1.6 maps. When I do the tutorial in Worldcraft/hammer, i follow all instructions. I make the basic block to move inside, but when i compile it, i get the error, windows:access denied. Is this because the directory is through steam to take wad files, and others? The examples they give for common directories are C:Sierra/Half-life/valve. Is this out of date before steam? Is it a windows security problem? A virus protection security problem? Should i use an alternate way of compiling? PLEASE SOMEONE HELP IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT FOR @ HOURS! I NEED HELP.

You haven't set up the paths properly. Read the configuration tutorials.

1st: Get Valve Hammer Editor 3.4, its Worldcraft, but heavily updated. And Get Zoner's Half-life Compile Tools (ZHLT). they work vastly better then what the quake compile tools that come with worldcraft can do.

2nd:read what's there

3rd:read this

Yes indeed, that tutorial is out of date--even Elon Yariv uses Steam now!!--, and it's title should include "Pre-Steam" or something.

Go here for Steam instrcutions.

@Seventh: Maybe it's time more aptly name old hammer setup--as well edit all the places he uses "WorldCraft" too lol-- to something like:

Hammer Setup(Without Steam, Pre-Steam, Lacuna Steam etc)

I'm not gunna spend a couple of days sorting that out now. When the time comes to re mark-up all the tutorials (<weeps>), we can do stuff like that.
