Hey guys.

Im a decent mapper, but my only problem is, i can never just come up with a good idea for a map. I usually start trying to re-create a map from another game, and a couple of them are going well but i haven't gotten to them lately. Since i suck at coming up with my own map ideas, does anyone have any suggestions for a Counter-Strike map, or HL Deathmatch map? Thanks for any ideas and suggestions.

Start with compotitions, I had that problem before, the compotitions help thinking on ideas. ;)

and, all ideas people would post would be horrible ideas, or decent ones. The good ideas people probably want to make themselves rather than hand them off >_<

Do a search for this on the forum. There have been many threads about this subject, and many usefull answers as well.

Answers that teach or guide you how to get idea's, not direct idea's themselves... ;)

but hey, for an idea. One at the top of a mountain, with catwalks and crap like that. Just some base or something, kinda like Lockout in Halo2, but it goes around the mountian, and more humanish.

Or a undersea base. Have windows that looked out into a very dark ocean place, maybe a tunnel with water all around you, and a tank with a ichty in it.

there, ideas.

Comparing with filming, let's just say you are a good camera operator but not a great director.
Thank god that's your only problem, because that's the most difficult part in mapping (besides having time, waiting for compiles etc). The first step towards becoming a good mapper is forgetting that you are going to make "a map". This isnt just about brush making. It's about level design. There's a purpose behind it.

Best advice i can give is: Make whatever you like / liked.

If you liked shooting down headcrabs with the RPG, then make maps where you shoot headcrabs with RPGs...

If you liked the way something jumped out in a game or a film, try to replicate it in your maps. Don't blatantly copy ideas, make them your own.
Einstein once remarked that, the most original & new ideas are simply well structured and covered up old ones.
