Can anyone tell me why do I get this and how to fix it?
Right after I click OK Hammer closes.

I had that too. But it seems like nothing crashed or anything like that. My hammer stayed open.

My hammer crashes. I thought they had solved the error (which they had created)
The lesson: If something works, and a lot of people use it, dont touch it. Upgrades should be an option.
Someone at vALVE needs a beating.

I am forced to use beta now because the old hammer just refuses to open...

The beta works fine for me so try that...

Well everything works great for me fortunately ;)
I have not experienced any problems and tried to go back to normal hammer because I thought it didn't allow you to tell func_door which way to turn but it seems Valve changed it as a new function in properties at the bottom...

Yes I have the "Fatal Error" as well. And my Hammer crashes also. Looks like Im going to have some trouble finishing up my level for the 28th. Ihope thye fix there fix soon. :tired:

there is a temporary fix(way around it)
go to C:Program FilesSteamSteamAppsusernamecounter-strike sourcecstrike and open the gameinfo.txt file (in notepad)
edit the line that says
ToolsAppId 211 // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materialsdebug, materialseditor, etc.
and remove the word tools from ToolsAppId

so it should read
AppId 211 // Tools will load this (ie: source SDK caches) to get things like materialsdebug, materialseditor, etc.

another error pops up about the .dll file but at least hammer opens :

For the moment, I'm using the beta sdk. I can't open some older maps because of the corrupt models, but I can still work on another one I started yesterday.
Remember, just add " -beta sdk" in the Steam shortcut properties.

I'm getting this error too - and I'm so sorry to hear you've got it too, Ichthyosaur (what ever shall we do for the LAN party?). Apparently, Valve fixed this problem once, but somehow their latest update has caused it again. I'm going to try reinstalling the SDK entirely, and I'll let you guys know this.

...sometimes, I actually envy myself 2 months ago, when I was using dial-up and never went online with Steam...

[EDIT] On second thought, I don't want to have to re-extract all those Counter-Strike and custom textures. I'll wait for a patch. In the meantime, everyone should try the method Slackiller mentioned - but you have to do it for each game type (HL2, DM and CS, depending on which you map for). The only problem is that the 3D view is REALLY screwed up, so you won't be able to see textures or much of anything unless it's in wireframe mode.

Kasperg: tried your suggestion now it seems Hammer's running again so many thanks. You know, after I tried around stuff that I will need in my DM maps, I've just planned my first map and was angry seeing that Hammer failed that time. Kasperg you had any problems with the beta yet that I should be aware of?
edit: now I have the first little problem: can't see the mouse in the x/y, x/z, y/z views and when I browse for models

Bah they fixed most of the errors now but one problem for me...They created a new ERROR!

I can't use VTEX to make custom textures and whats worse is now it can't vtex at all...Curse you Valve!

Indeed, I hate that beta..

Valve really needs to fix this stupd 211 error..

Will take atleast 3 days since they also got holidays for christmas, just like everybody else ;)

No shit, that's about the same line im getting with my new map

Im getting the ID error thing too, i freaking bought this game.

Now all they do is shit people out with that box "Bla bla we had over 2.70 billion of hours for every single players" - Who the F cares? They count AAALOT Of bots anyway so they can TRY to get their stastics as good as ut2004 or BF2.
Or maybe they could get a patch out to fix that gay problem.

I am convinced that it's a Valve conspiracy to force mappers to beta-test their Hammer. Want it or not, we're being recruited as beta-testers for them.

Here's one mapper they won't trick so easily into being an unwilling guinea pig - .dll errors be d**ned, I'm going to compile my map using the old Hammer even if the 3D view continues its polar-bear-in-a-snowstorm-at-night tirade. Let's hope Valve's Christmas gift to us all this year is a working SDK...they've got about 4:30 hours before it's too late where I live.

Does anyone know how many people work at vALVE?
If they had me in their team, there would probably be a monthly custom map release, "HL2:Aftermath" would be finished by now and "HL2:Lost Coast" would have been more than 15 minutes long.
My Hammer beta works exactly like it did the other time. Some random models are screwed up, and placing them in the map causes Hammer to crash. If I try to open a map that has one of those models, Hammer also crashes. Luckily, you can actually see which models are corrupted thanks to the new model browser (the only nice thing in the beta)

I'm fairly sure that the error has been noticed, and I'm about 100% sure it will be resolved soon. VALVe are not one to let critical errors go unchecked for ages. Stop bashing Steam and VALVe ffs.

Perhaps you are right and we should lay off, I think people just want to vent there anger at the fact that not only did valve send a fatal error along with the updates (which are mandatory), but it is an error they created AND fixed before.

However, thorough the use of the beta and the method that slackiller generously gave us, we can continue working on out levels and using hammer. It is of course an inconvenience but most of us can live with it.

I agree with you 100% that they will have it up and running shortly. All we have to do is wait...

It seems its fixed. I just started Hammer 4 and no longer received that 211 error. :)

Anyone else experiencing problems with the 3D view? I'm only getting wireframe, and even that isn't working too well.

I've removed "-beta sdk" from the Steam shortcut and I've refreshed the SDK contents. I've also checked the gameinfo.txt files, and everything looks like it should.

thepreacher, that's one of the many, general problems associated with that temporary fix - I think I speak for almost everyone when I say that "We've got it, all right!" : You're not alone, so don't feel bad!

Texturing is virtually impossible, isn't it? On that note, so is doing just about anything, including brushwork.

Valve, you are forgiven. :glad:

I never really was angry at them, but the fact that the error came just as Ichthyosaur and I were getting our maps ready for our LAN party was very disappointing. At least they, unlike some software companies, actually respond quickly to such unfortunate problems.

You can fix the file not found error by rextracting the files from the GCF.
