If you haven't seen this yet, check it out. It'll allow countless number of talentless mappers to generate killboxes for many years to come. :tired:

It isnt completely bad looking, hammer is far superior though!! Over elaborate trumpet solo!!!

That looks too boxlike.

I've tried it and I personally think it sucks. I'd rather map for a real game.

Well it looks ok, but I have an opinion bout those "OMGZ0R 3DEEz0r GAMEZ0r CRZEAT0RZ!!1~"

I'd rather create a game from scratch. :

Silly. Asking money for such a package while in fact, you know any game created with it won't be a too good game anyway.

But hey, the more killboxes, the more even normal maps will stand out... ;)

Something about those cool guns is shooting into my head and saying 'Valve Hammer and i are both equal , execept i'm pretty pointless'
uh , it does look good thought! (No i am still maping for HL , and come and see me website!))

Hammer, beats it hands down.

i can understand the appeal but seriously.. the ammount of people who are going to think of themselves as uber-leet PC gods for being able to totally make a game!! ZORZ!! WOAH!! :|

it reminds me of people who use none of their own brushwork in photoshop and simply compile ready-made images into a working state and then call it their own work.

boring, and honestly pretty sad.

Valve Hammer Editor is like the public library system. It's should be too good to be true, yet it exists.

Imagine what we'd be without Hammer or Valve.

valve rule for the most part.. but i used to be a strong steam supporter. i hate it now.. they fucked up so badly over the past few months.

Source SDK beta : un-uninstallable - fucked
CS : S : more crashing errors than in any other game. totally un-beta tested. fucked.

HL2dm : Listen server hosting fucked repeatedly with a rusty spoon!

why cant they just leave it alone when it works?!

Amen to that. :) It's a great program.

Hammer is better for it can do more stuff and you have more control on what it does, although it's harder to use.

This is probably how people who make actually make their own games look at hammer users.

yeah.I'm ran out of ideas. (first wrong thing)Buttons are well easy on Hammer (second) elevators are pretty dull
(third) You don't have hands on the guns , its a TS effect (Time Spliiters , the gun floats ,man! reloading without a hand , BLEAK)

Unreal Tournament mappers, I assume?

I'd have to agree about the latest Steam updates, they're far from ideal for a lot of people. Not a good thing. Steam itself still isn't bad however, but yeah...

Anyway, to me this is something like throwing downloaded prefabs into a map and calling it a map. Granted, technically it's a map but to me, it doesn't deserve that name - good maps are hand-crafted products, not mass-generated things. You don't play a lot of maps, you play the few that you like the most. But hey, that's just rehashing a known opinion... ;)

It looks like most of you consider Hammer is the only 3D level editor maps and everything else is just shit ...

Are you always so self-centred ?...

Valve must include some drugs into their softwares to make most CS gamers not play anything else and most Source users not use anything else ...

Personally, I think the time it would take me to learn a new editor would be better invested in working on my current maps.
HL games are usually more popular than other games, so a mapper has more guarantees that the map will be downloaded, commented on and even played. The contrary could also be true. If there are less maps for a certain game, your's would be more known.
Anyway, let's just say that if you learned to write with your right hand (Hammer), for example, it would be more logical to keep practising than trying to learn to write with your left foot (UnrealEd).
Posted 18 years ago2005-12-25 17:22:44 UTC Post #154480
Ok. All i'm gunna say is.-
start with the bads-
  • does not have 3d view on mapping
-killboxes.
-weapons are sh*tty
-desert eagle sound for a tervor?
-trial version only includes 50% of the full game so that's pish.
-Ambient Generics are well easier than about 25 lines of what the hell is this.

the goods

+somethjing which would take an hour in hammer takes a minuet
+easier than hammer.
+thats all.
Hammer has more control over things , and sounds are pish.
So ... if FPS creator was rated 5 / 10 , hammer would be 7 / 5.
good are both

That's why I map for HL/HL2. And because CS/CS:S is so popular, I ventured into that arena as well.

There's no point mapping for something that no one else will ever play.

L and R aren't even close. Clear intentionality.

As for that program... "Game makers" of sorts have never interested me. Takes all the fun out of it.
"Yay, lets make a game that looks exactly the same as everyone elses!!!"... Nah.

Downloaded it, looked around, and tried to uninstall.

Btw, it leaves a whole bunch of junk behind. Don't know if there is any spywear yet, but, wouldn't be surprised...

If I was going to make a game, I'd code it myself, use Ogre or another program I can't seem to remember the name of, to get me most of the way.

I know what its like I guess, I used to play diablo2 (Its a stupid game, So many hackers and shit) But when the fun got taken out of it by some loosers , I started making a mod for it (dident last a few months though) You have no program like hammer or anything and theres heaps of coding that you have to do, So thats why i gave up, and after i finished that i came to here.
But anyway, I think that program is shit just for people who are too lazy to get off their ass and do anything to hard.

Back to the point. I think the objective of level designers is to create new game arenas that are fun to play. You can either innovate and make an original setting, or map something that has been done before, but improving it. I think this "level editor" allows you to do none of those 2 things, so...

Such game creators have huge limits and you won't be able to create anything original. And the chance to create fuckin killboxes till' ya choke is just not worth $49.99! Who the hell are those morons kidding?

Do you mean you can't edit anything on this soft ? no way to create your own gameplay ? is it "just" a level editor for a given FPS, or really a "3D game creator" ?
There's no point mapping for something that no one else will ever play.
Do you mean you know CS gamers who play mappers maps ?
Posted 18 years ago2005-12-26 13:58:23 UTC Post #154614
I once joined a CS server that was running my map cs_1701e, so yes, it is possible.
Posted 18 years ago2005-12-26 14:23:29 UTC Post #154618
You join once a server running your map then you consider your map played ?

I could think the same thing with this software : I make a map, post a link here, some guys reply "omg crap!", then I consider the map played, at least as much as yours ...

No.
de_dust2 is played.
awp_map is played.
de_raid, cs_industrywest, de_vine, cs_assault_christmas, de_vostok, de_arizona, de_herrenberg, cs_rio, de_alps, de_quarry, de_struction, de_volare etc aren't played.

There is no matter of "skills" or "art" or number of players who are statistically playing the game or whatever here, there is only a matter of mentality : CS gamers do not play mappers maps, they just play endlessly dust and poolday, then sorry but in my very humble opinion there isn't less sense making maps with that software than with Hammer (I am talking from the CS point of view, I don't know how is the hldm community, if it even exists) ...
