Ok, heres the story,

-> previously had 512mb ram

-> bought 1GB Ram (1 stick of 1GB, not 2 512mb)

-> tried installing 1GB with 512mb stick, and my computer didn't have it.

-> swapped slots around - no luck

-> used 1GB stick in slot 1 on its own - IT WORKED

that was yesterday. today, I booted up - the ram didn't

so im back with a dilema. my old 512mb stick still works.

what do I do? any ideas why 1GB stick now isn't working? thnx

Try this: Remove your CMOS Battery for a little while (Like an hour or so) Install the RAM, then put the CMOS Battery back in and let it do a memory test.

ive sort of already tried.

removed battery (with ram in)

then ran memory test (all fine btw)

How long did you leave the battery out? By m0p's advice I left my CMOS Battery out for 3 days to completely clear it, and it solved my problem.

so when doing, have ram in?

when I say 'won't boot:

ntoskrnl is fine, but it stops after - no logon screen. POST is fine though

Are there any beeps? I imagine if there were, you would have said so, but just checking. I say, install the RAM before the CMOS Battery so the first thing it recognizes is that there is 1.5 Gb of RAM rather than 512 Mb.

i think to not make things worse, i might just use the 1GB on its own

oh, and there were no beeps, although there is this one really quiet beep during POST, but i think thats OK?

2x512MiB may be better.

Does the correct amount of RAM show up in the BIOS setup?

You already probably verified this when buying the RAM, but is it the right kind for your motherboard? Matching RAM types helps, as long as they are compatible with the motherboard.

make sure the bios isnt trying to run the ram in dual channel mode too, cause that would screw it up significantly

Theres some things you would need to tell us such as the speed and type of RAM you are trying to fit, the mobo your trying to put it in and the same info for the RAM youve already got.

Some older mobos will not accept memory sticks over a certain size. Ive had this same problem with some old 133 SDRAM.

How would I stop it running dual-channel?
