People complain that computer games are too violent, but just take a look at these lyrics from an age-old nursery rhyme!

It's got suffering, animal mutilation, murder, and concealment of criminal evidence. Compared to this song, Half-Life 2 should be rated "G".
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee,
Won't my mommy be so proud of me,
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee,
Ouch! It stung me!

I'm squishing up the baby bumblebee,
Won't my mommy be so proud of me,
I'm squishing up a baby bumblebee,
Ooh! It's yucky!

I'm wiping off the baby bumblebee,
Won't my mommy be so proud of me,
I'm wiping off the baby bumblebee,
Now my mommy won't be mad at me!

Im sorry, Satch... but you really cant compare blood, guts and gore to a little nursery rhyme like that... HL2 getting a mature rating is quite reasonable...

Age ratings suck. All of them.
It's up to the parents to see if their kids get braindamaged by playing bloody games (which I seriously think they don't).
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-02 08:35:04 UTC Post #172017
Sacho, squashing a bumble bee hardly compares to mutalating a human with explosives or running somone over in a car while blasting away with a 9mm automatic out of the side window.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-02 11:31:09 UTC Post #172038
It depends... If you have one of those kids who shoots dogs, and drowns cats, they will definatly become fucked up, but just squishing a bee... I don't see the harm.

Video games would not cause a kid to run around and shoot people... It would be the kids own fault, but primarily the parents fault for raising a fuckup.

I don't know if it's just me, but i detected a hint of sarcasm in satchmo's writing. I don't think he meant it to be taken so seriously Tycell.

Did that not seem a little sarcastic, even humerous? I mean c'mon "concealment of criminal evidence" -> "i'm wiping off the bumblebee"..? :P and you say seriously that 'it hardly compares', that hl2 mutilates humans with explosives!?, it was a sly joke.

ED: Atleast, that's what i think..

Yeah and I hate game raters who's job is to rate games...In Japan they get games before us and then when we get it things are edited out cause they are too violent etc...Well I don't give a crap! If I want gore I'll pay for it! I don't like it when others choose for me.

HL2 = Pure sane gameplay...
Manhunt = An entertaining game that shows the horrors of death.

God screw song lyrics! That is nothing compared to games!

If a kid can kill a bee and not think anything about it, he will grow up thinking killing other things is ok if he continues to do it. Lol...gateway kills.

Age ratings won't really stop anybody. Even little kids (of like, 8 years old) are playing GTA and such, which is rated 18. And even if their parents won't buy them a game, it's not exactly difficult for anybody with remote computer knowledge to download age-restricted games/movies/whatever.

I hate it when TV channels cut out bits of films because they are considered "too violent". Just the other night I was watching a film where the hero was fighting the bad guy at the end, the bad guy had two flaming swords and the hero was trying to pushes them away from his face, next thing you know the flaming swords are gone and the bad guy is picking himself up off the floor, I was like "WTF! BASTARDS!". Ah well, was an absouly shit film anyway.

There is a difference when Gordon shoots the Combines and zombies than little children maiming innocent animals.

Combines belong to an alien species, even though they look like humans. Zombies are ex-humans. Their former hosts probably appreciate Gordon for putting their walking corpse out of undead misery. All the enemies in Half-Life 2 are out to terminate Gordon. So you can justify the violence because the player is only trying to defend his own life.

However, nursery rhymes in general are full of suffering and disaster. "Ring Around the Rosy" is about dying from consumption (tuberculosis) or the plague. "London Bridge" is perhaps a description of a terrorist act (falling down, falling down). Most of these rhymes are extremely depressing and violent. "Mary Mary Quite Contrary" is about beheading human beings. I bet most of you didn't know that.

Yet they are endorsed by parents and teachers.

I just don't get it.

P.S. This is something I found that tells the historically accurate story behind Hympty-Dumpty. It's quite fascinating.

There is a massive difference between reading about a violent act and then watching / participating in a violent act. Reading about people getting their heads cut off is part of history, there isnt anything damaging about it. Watching some gangster cut somone head off on your mates cell phone, now that is disturbing, trust me.

no thats sadisdical and its called snuff machinery. Only people with nothing better to do check that stuff out. whereas nursery ryhmes are actually told by parents sort of "prescribed"
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-03 08:37:08 UTC Post #172195
Aww ffs.
Nursery rhymes were found a really long time ago. Most of the old ones were meant to scare the children to sleep ('Sleep, baby, sleep.. If you don't sleep, a wolf will come and eat you'... and stuff like that), because they wouldn't go to bed earlier.
There are tons of nursery rhymes, that contain 'violent rhymes'. It's plain normal. Either you're trying to make something big out of nothing, or you're just having a laugh.. :P

This is about violent ryhmes... and no ones mentioned rap yet :D

Eminem needs to be shot:

I ain't gonna eat, I ain't gonna sleep
Ain't gonna breathe, til I see, what I wanna see
And what I wanna see, is you go to sleep, in the dirt
Permanently, you just being hurt, this ain't gonna work
For me, it just wouldn't be, sufficient enough
Cuz we, are just gonna be, enemies
As long as we breathe, I don't ever see, either of us
Coming to terms, where we can agree
There ain't gonna be, no reason, speakin wit me
You speak on my seed, then me, no speakin Englais
So we gonna beef, and keep on beefin, unless
You're gonna agree, to meet with me in the flesh
And settle this face to face, and you're gonna see
A demon unleashed in me, that you've never seen
And you're gonna see, this gangsta pee on himself
I see you D-12, and thanks, but me need no help
Me do this one all by my lonely, I don't need fifteen of my homies
When I see you, I'm seeing you, me and you only
We never met, but best believe you gon' know me
When I'm this close, to see you exposed as phony
Come on, bitch, show me, pick me up, throw me
Lift me up, hold me, just like you told me
You was gonna do, that's what I thought, you're pitiful
I'm rid of you, all you, Ja, you'll get it too!

[Chorus]
Now go to sleep bitch!
Die, motherfucker, die! Ugh, time's up, bitch, close ya eyes
Go to sleep, bitch! (what?)
Why are you still alive? How many times I gotta tell ya, close ya eyes?
And go to sleep bitch! (what?)
Die motherfucker die, bye, bye, motherfucker, bye, bye!
Go to sleep bitch! (what?)
Why are you still alive? Why, die motherfucker, ah, ah, ah...
...Go to sleep bitch!

(theres more, but thats nuf said.)

Just because some rough end white man acts, speaks and sings like a black man, and sings songs about how he is going to kill you and hurt your and do bad things in the form of rap DOES NOT mean you can condem all rap as bad.

Of course, you are entitles to your opinion but look at all sides of it before you close and bolt the door. Papa Roach was one of the bands (one of the many bands) I grew up listning to, they have some rap moments in their songs, does that mean they are rappers? No.

Limp Bizkit is an excellent band with songs that have a lot of meaning behind them and that you can relate too, they are mostly rap. Sure, they have some songs which could be condemed as 'violent songs' but that doesnt mean that all rap, and in turn all their music, is bad.

Its a common feeling that rap is going to be the downfall of America, but thats rubbish. If America is going to fall its going to be the usual suspects; Ignorance, Arrogance, Self-Rightiousness and Icolation. Its happened before it will happen again, America is no different.

No offence in any way towards any Americans, I am not calling you all Ignorant or Arrogant or self righious, I am saying they are the reasons that your country will fall, if indeed if survives to fall on its own (There isnt some nuclear war or natural catastrophy). Everyone these days seems so eager to place blame on others for their problems, and not look onto themselfs and see the fault is as much their own as the ones they are blaming.

rap can be intresting in my opinion at times and good to listen to, but there are some really crap songs. Correct me if im wrong but wasn't there like this ueber conflict between JaRule and Eminem/50 cent/ Dr Dre sometime back? the songs they made to diss each other were terrible. just vulger terms mixed together like letter soup. However there are some good rap songs which have good beats and actually tell a story where noone dies :}
