Ok my first map is quite bad as u all say BUT how is it that it has been giving 103 votes(which are bad) and only had 30 downloads. I was away at canada for one week and it has got to 103??? it was on 17 last time i checked before i went. Why do people SPAM THE VOTING SO MUCH????? whats the point?

the point of these evil spammers is to post what they think 5,000,000 times so that what they think is "right"

P.S. does it have that fricken elevator in it?
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-22 19:29:58 UTC Post #17002
Why, because people are jerks and see their opportunity and take it AND KILL VOTE OF MAPS "SOME PEOPLE" HAVE WORKED ON FOR 14+ HOURS BEFORE FINALLY FINISHING IT AND HAVING IT BE "SOME PEOPLE'S" BEST WORK EVER!

Easy now.
I think/hope a map voting thingie is on its way so that 1 user can vote on a map 1 time.

If you have a good look at all the maps in the vault, you might discover that the really good ones get really good ratings.
The really bad ones get thousands of bad ratings. So to avoid the discomfort of finding out that your work is generally unpopular don't check the "rate map" box. That way people who want to say something against your map will have to log in to leave a comment.
Pretty simple when you think about it ;)
Actually shutting down the voting system all together might be an easier option.

yeah, but i never get bad ratings on my maps so i wouldnt ay shut it down :zonked: wouldnt realy like it, especialy now. im about to start a day of defeat map :)

14 hours? Oh wow, like thats a lot. Overlord took me about 8 months to make and went through several hundred revisions. It's possibly the most complicated and advanced TFC map ever made, it was rated a 3 so really, who cares?

Your map however looks and is, a poor effort and one worthy of a beginning mapper. Therefore respect the rule that you should NEVER EVER released your first map and expect any self respecting mapper to like it.

Hey, people liked Nuclear Core 1 (not the crap second one) and that was my first map that worked properly! I went through several tries before I uploaded it. I even made Nuclear Core 1.5 which was a totally different design (but it was never released, well, not yet). I put in a unsuccessful level transition as well! I think the original Nuclear before I released it had 20 leaks! "20"!!! And now I can't map cos I have another busted HDD! DAMN YOU WESTERN DIGITAL!!!

I released one of my first maps after a year wait. So in total it took about 2 years to get out there door, lo and behold it was rubbish and noone played it.

NEVER EVER release your first map
Good advice from Jobabob.
Do what I did, send it too a friend that you trust. If you get a reply like:
"Um, err, yeah... that was pretty good"
Then you can rest assured that it was complete rubbish and it's time you started again. Mapping is an ongoing process.
Most good mappers have one or two maps on their drives that they bring out and fool around with from time to time.
Time is everything.
It is really easy to spot something that has been done in a weekend and unless there is technical brilliance involved, most people walk away from the viewing with a distinct taste of bile in their mouths.
As I troll through the Vault, I amazed at what some people offer up as complete.
I am amazed at the audacity with which they present their masterpieces as wonderful additions to the major popular Mods.
I am Gobsmacked at their advertisements in the Shout Box, urging people to come and rate their maps......
And a true sense of bewilderment comes over me when those same people, feign hurt and outrage at the other members treatment of their work.

You will get good map ratings if you spend the time and produce something worthwhile. Ocassionally there have been vindictive ratings, as was the case with jobabobs Overlord, but that was the last time something worthwhile was trashed by the members.

Currently about < 2% of the Vault is worth downloading.
I think we should kill off the rating system and get a professional reviewer in, like the stuff that used to be done at the SnarkPit.... No punches pulled, the reviewer gives it the stars and the only comment.
That might slow the abuse of the Vault down a little ;)

Sorry SlayerA and Seventh.. I know I said I wouldn't react... but ARGH!

For a start, that is EXTREMLY good advice from Jobabob. Your first map will pretty much be crap. Secondly EXTREMLY gr8 words from Andy. Now I'm not the greatest mapper in the world thats for sure. But so long as I think pratically then thats ok. I think the best thing to do is NOT to make a big Hooha about ur map and let people find it themselves. When you start saying things like "Best map ever!" or "This is a great map!" then other peoples expectations will rise and they will most definately expect more out of your map, something it perhaps cannot deliver.

My first released map (not my first ever map) received an average of 3 stars, which is pretty pathetic. Back to the drawing board. Keep designing, keep trying other maps, get ideas, map it out and get a close friend to take a look! As Andy said above!

The best practice would be to expect a neutral review. Don't expect poeple to acclaim your map and don't expect people tp critisice your map. Then you can truly come back and say "How can I improve?" and then do it!

I finish by saying everyone gets better over time, just depends on how much time it takes. Just make sure you take the time! :)

I'll revive it again instead of starting a new rant thread. Is it possible to change the rating system? I'm not worried about bad votes, but lately there's been a flood of "Tihs is my 1st map and it s awesome!!1" with 5 stars and more votes than downloads. Forgot about stars... I appreciate comments more than votes anyway. The new rating system could list total comments... if it's really good or really awful I'd want to peek! I also think an admin should edit those posts already in the map vault... perhaps setting votes to 0 and disabling votes. You could even add something to their description like "I didn't read the tutorials" or... Well, you get the picture.

By the way, if you ever need a moderator with draconian views to abuse their authority, I'm your man! :badass:

theres no point in votin ur map good cos nobody cares about what other people think, its what they think. everybody has different tastes, so its pretty much impossible to make a map everybody likes. "combining action with strategy and stealth". this wont appeal to everybody, because even if you like stealth theres still the action and strategy. the problam with the map vaults voting is that it works on the average amount of ratings. i think andys i dea was good to have a reviewer check the maps, but like i said, every1 has different tastes. i think it would b better if there were a panel of judges, each with different tastes. reviewing a map is really just describing it, so with a team working together it could get rid of the biased reviews. this navbar is orange fading to light yellow. its like that whether you like the calm yellow colours, or think it looks like cats piss. im going to stop now, cos im rambling on now and i dont know where to go.wow, that post was almost worthy of something andy would write!

Isn't that blasphemy? ;)

Perhaps. Only with more punctuation and maybe a line break or two.

Wouldn't it be easy for 'someone' to fix it so that people who submit their can't actually vote for their map? It wouldn't be that hard surely!

Setting it up that way would be easy... probably just as easy as logging out and voting 5x.

Good point. Sad, sad people will make multiple accounts.

Ministeve: good idea, they use that in Electronic Gaming Monthly (3 reviewers instead of one)
