I'm currently mapping a part of my school, which when finished, I'll send as a part of my application for university. So I'll need some help from you master-mappers out there :P

My first questions are:

You know that bright white blinding light coming from the windows? How do I make it blinding? I know I must use a completely white texture, but there are so many to choose from and I'm not sure which one to use.

Also, how do I make the "ray"-effect coming from the windows?

A first counter-question would be: what game are you mapping for? :P

I assume this is Source, and in that case you'll use point_spotlights and spot_lights.
As for ray effects, or volumetric light, there's a model for that, I believe it's in the effects folder.

You cannot make it "blinding" persay without coding, but a version of Source is coming out soon that does imitate eye adjustment.

I'd use the color called +0~white. It has additive nature programmed into it...

Or, you could use the normal white and make it a func_wall_toggle, then play with the effects...

As for light rays:

Just make a texture gradient, and make a brush coming from the window. Then, tie the brush to a fuch_wall, and render it with "texture", then make the value to 50 or something.

I believe there is an example map explaining light rays...

Good luck...

[EDIT]
AHH!! Captain! You beat me too it... This was refering to HL1 btw...

Well actually I learnt how to make a nice blinding light thanks to the Nightfall team and their heh VMF files...

Allow me to show you...

Tell me which one matches your request...The closer you get the less you can see and they used env_glow combined with env_sprite (glow) and light_spot.

And my compo map glow:

I hope this is the effect you want..It isn't like blinding as in you look at it and then your eyes go fuzzy but it does cause your vision to weaken as you look at it...

Read the tutorial on "The Tunnel Effect".

You dont need env_glows or any shit like that, not even a white texture, just read the tut.
