Jobabob: it's not that society would be better if we all went back to church. Screw church... That's where kids get molested. If you REALLY live by what the bible says, you would not be harming others or yourself, you would be treating everyone with love and respect and MP3's would be free and legal.

It's only when SOME get greedy and cheat, does a universal set of rules not work 100% efficiently.

If you obeyed the nice bits, surely? You're not claiming that it in no way contradicts itself in parts?

If everyone would live by the bible we'd still have slaves and be racists.
However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

I think that part applied to the time it was written. idk could be wrong. Everything in the Bible could go so many ways its hard to tell.

People have had faith in something for all of time. Mocking any religion is intolerent. Some people need to believe in something. Its not serious enough to change the world. Once it becomes this, then it merits attention.

(Dont say that the Muslim faith's Gihad is violent. DOnt say its the reason the terrorists go to war. They change and pervert the Quran. Gihad is only supposed to keep infadels out of Persia. ONLY PERSIA. Gihad cannot go farther than Persia, and only can be called from religious percecution in PERSIA!)

There are very questionable things in the Hebrew Bible, known to Christians as the Old Testament. The New Testament is the one that deals with the teachings of Jesus etc, in case anyone wanted to know.

This sentence applies to most things in this world:

"If it doesnt bother you directly, and wont cause anything serious, dont bother, just go make some cool map instead!"

When it comes to religion, there's no shortage of heated emotion.

Needless to say, I am an atheist. But I hope everyone understand that the most inflammatory remarks I made in the past few days were just inteded to inflame the debate.

I do respect other people's beliefs, as long as they don't infringe upon my rights and other people's rights.

Word. The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost can all bow dow and lick my butt crack. [/controvert]

That said, I do believe Most Religions are generally a good guideline for humans to follow. It's the zealots that really ruin religion, and make it intolerable to atheists such as myself.

Although I consider myself conservative on many issues, the Religious Right completely loses me. I can almost understand doing it for votes, but I can't abide the powers that be using Religion to control people.

The bible contradicts itself? Tell me where.

And yes, the bible is not against slavery. It even says "If you're a slave, be a GOOD slave." Different people have different lots in life.

Posted 18 years ago2006-04-23 03:44:24 UTC Post #176192
a slave is just someone who works at your house and lives there and eats your food. They're called "kids" to some people. If you treat your slaves the way the bible tells you, they are more like "live-in pals." :)

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

Nickel, in my eyes the bible is one big contradiction when i read it.
So, if the bible says that then go must be some sort of Nazi uber hitler thingy up there. Freaky.

Oh come on, you cant possibly believe you can defend that statement.

Heres the fastest google search I could find
JOH 10:30 I and my Father are one.
JOH 14:28 I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Its even in the same book of the bible. Lets not even bother getting into the technicalities of 'interpretation' as we've already been down that road a thousand times already.

Jobabob: a contradiction of "thou shatl not kill" would be "thou shalt kill." seen nowhere.

Jesus' father and he are one, But jesus has the disdvantage of being a man and his father God is just a spirit. That's the whole point of Jesus being on earth to start with, because he would have ot be a man like all the rest of us.

There is no such thing as disinterested help in the political world. No country helps another one because of kindness or love... Not if there's no profit.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-23 21:31:09 UTC Post #176330
Does that make their help any less valuable to your country, Kasperg?

If everyone stopped accepting things from people with ulterior motives, nothing would change hands. Unless it's from me, because I care.

You might be right, but I think Gwil wanted to say that Satchmo is in debt with the U.S because they have aided Taiwan (against Chinese interests) and because of that he should keep all the bad things he sees in Americans to himself. Am I right?
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-23 21:58:39 UTC Post #176336
Well, there are certainly a lot of things that are bad about americans. for the most part I hate how americans live too, I hate how the majority of people in America are complete morons, like the ones that Satchmo originally posted about. HOWEVER: saying "Americans are stupid" is like saying "Polish ppl are stupid" it's not true for ALL the people so it just increases the chances that people wil start hating each other. I get bashed all the time on the net for being an american (also for being Christian, lol) because everyone thinks that americans are stupid, BECAUSE the celebrities and politicians are the only thing that other countries see of us. If some dude in finland or wherever could meet people like me or satchmo or hugh, they'd be all like "Wow, americans are teh r0x0r!!!1"

Americans are theh r0x0r because we can occupy your countries if we wanted too.

'americans are stupid' should be rephrased to 'the american public school system is really terrible leading to a disproportionate number of people that film themselves blowing limbs off and posting it on ogrish, etc'

I don't like saying so, but when I lived in California, a very high percentage of the intelligent "Honor roll" students were foreigners. That doesn't mean the rest were stupid, they just didn't care to learn. I was the Sixth Grade finalist in our Geography Bee in Middle School the year I arrived. There were quite a lot of people in Sixth grade and I didn't understand all the questions they asked me, so you can imagine what things were like if I got so far in the competition... :zonked:

More or less I am trying to say that yes, it does seem a little strange to be attacking a country which is for many who go to it's shores, a land of vast opportunity. To go back to the start of the thread, i'd wager that if you asked random citizens of the United Kingdom pop trivia about their nation they wouldn't be able to answer.

While these people may not be able to debate the rights and wrongs of their country, or discuss a potted history of their nation, they are still citizens who serve their country in some way or another. Intellectual elitism is dangerous ground to walk on, because it is usually those who we would consider "stupid" that keep things ticking day by day.

Keep in mind also, as Nickel well knows, and a few others from here, that I am the first to jump on American foreign policy and international relations, their domestic policies too. I just think it is absurd to make assumptions about an entire nations intelligence and in turn victimise them for not posessing the articulate abilities which as demonstrated here, in the wrong hands and the wrong motivation are the greatest signs of ignorance and stupidity any person can posess.

Gwil, I agree with you completely.

If you know me well enough, you'll know my penchant for controversial subjects. And this propensity is perhaps surpassed only by my passion for inciting strong emotions.

I achieved both by starting this thread the way I did, and just behold how it has grown! It has overtaken the venerable "Now Playing" thread in number of posts and viewing within a short period of time.

But it is true that I am a bit disillusioned by the general complacency of the American public. We tend to view ourselves as intellectually and economically superior than the rest of the world, and I do want to bring it back down to its place a tad. As I said before, it's a wake-up call.

Americans, we need to work harder and study harder to maintain our tenuous position in the international community. Our mighty nation has slipped in the past decade, and if we're not careful, we'll become the modern day Roman Empire. We'll crumble with the weight of our own ignorance and corruption.

Unfortunately, I feel the Golden Era for this nation is already behind us, dating back to the glorious post World War II period. Back then, work ethic and morale were equally high. As China is poised to take over the role of world leadership, America can only sit and watch as it happens.

It'll be a wierd transition for us, the world will be much more orientally influenced, however, I think for China to fully takeover they must let their own citizens embrace American culture more freely, otherwise we'll have another massive war with the victor emerging as the world ruler.

That's moving a bit off topic though.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-24 14:07:13 UTC Post #176468
You make a good point there satch in defence of promoting education and the advantages of being learned. I'd say Americas dabblings in the Middle East and further afield, led by a particularly inept administration is already bringing the downfall of the empire.

As a superpower it's not even a case of America being pushed into #2 spot now - with India on the horizon, as well as China, the US dominance will play second fiddle to the Asian giants and possibly Latin American giants, too.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-24 14:24:42 UTC Post #176472
In my opinion, India still has a long way to go before becoming a prominent world figure.

The sports arena is a good indicator of one nation's dominance. Have you ever seen an Indian Olympic medal? Despite their population size, the entire country is still mired in poverty and corruption. Perhaps fifty years later, but today's world belongs to China.

Posted 18 years ago2006-04-24 14:41:46 UTC Post #176481
Those are also ironically the two things that are holding back China, corruption and it's way-too-massive population. It's helped it in some arenas like sport but in normal life it has just added to the corruption and poverty. At least that's my view, it's not an exact science.

The only reason all these countries are up-and-coming, is because tey are basically financed by the largest consumer in the world, the USA. If the USA falls and no one is able to afford anything anymore, these other countries will too, because there is not enough of a base or thier products elsewhere.

Just look at our dependence on foreign oil.

Eventually, America is going to invade and occupy all oil-producing countries, just to feed our addiction to gas-consuming SUV's.

In theory we should be able to maintain a life standard after America has fallen, since it will immediatly stimulate the trade with the middle eastern and far eastern country's, also Africa will make a good chance. Probably bring some peace too if the trade relations are changing since everyone will turn away from America and releasing tension on the world politics.
