Don?t get me wrong now dudes!

I think that we have discoussed this matter many times over and we came up with a few things carving is bad for, but they made the carving tool for a reason and it works! Well most of the times, and when i "went nuts" with the carving tool i went nuts in a carefull way, it is true that most of the times you should build thing brush by brush, but carving is good for lets say you made a house, you need doors and window, carv them! It works fine! you shouldn?t be afriad of the carving tool, it?s really helpful many times, but as you said P, carving a block that touches the void is a bad idea.

I carve a lot, and it makes me wounder what in the name of god you people do with the carving tool when you get so many errors with it. Well, we have been over this so i don?t see any reason to start this all over again, some people carve and some people don?t, i think that we should just leave it with that.

Maybe you can show us some example of your carving.

What?s there to show? some things that you create brush by brush and i carve them to save time, nothing fancy really. the cylinders might be a bit more, but i tryed to carve to cylinders in the same brush, that my friend was a decition from hell.

A tip to all people that tries to carve a cylinder, make sure that the brush you carve it from isn?t to big.

Carving is always a bad idea.

tosee when you carve a cylinder hammer creates at least 5 more unnecessary brushes... i just done see how you can live with that mess in the 2-d views.

well, it?s onlt on very rare ocations i carve cylinders, and it really ain?t that hard to keep track on things in the 2d views, really. but when i finaly do carve a cylinder the hole cover most parts if the brush so those 5 unnecessary brushes you are talking about ain?t that big and don?t disturb me at all. Or if the block is big enough i first cut out a square inside the big brush that suits the cylinder.

I've used carving on rare occasions where I have to cut through beams in order to make space for a wall. With the wall selected, I tell Hammer to carve. The beams are rectangular prisms and the wall just goes through them at a perfectly perpendicular angle. Thus the wall just deletes the beam sections that it crosses. After this process I have a row of beams on each side of the wall.
The only reason I do this is to save the time of selecting all those beams (forgot to group them doh!) and then clipping them twice in order to delete the section which is overlapped by the wall.
Other than such cases, where the brushes being carved are simple and the result of the carve is simple, I NEVER carve. Besides, the clip tool and vertex manipulation are much more versatile.

OMG This thread has been going forever!!

There's only 1 sentence I am comfortable saying in this topic, and this sentence should have finished it!

Clip to divide the brush in a horizontal, and verticle way.. then use vertex-manipulation
There finish! :D

You clearly have a gross misconception of the initiative displayed by people learning to map nowadays.
