Thanks Daub.. Biggest map I've made yet, well, for it being one area.. In the compo, you are only restricted to 1 room.. so I thought, that I could'nt really make an indoor map.. so decided to take it outside..
Things still to do:
- Make a 3D Skybox:
User posted image

- Having an APC drive by on top of the arch in the firstscreenshot.

-Texturing adjustments
- 2 Architectural Buildings

I Have to win this for HL1.. It's the Competition of the year!

Saw the second map on Interlopers...Had no idea it was being entered in this competition.

Liking the church but the ceiling has weird colours that don't blend in...

So how many entrants are there at the moment?

I agree it has a copy-paste feel. It was a widely used method of creating modulated architecture in ancient times, but textures in today's games make it very obvious.
I don't think using more textures or adding overlays would really help at all

I agree. But out of habit, I always think about the structures that would hold the map if it was a real place, as I need to follow that process when making projects for class :(
If you think about it, a world where the player follows the laws of gravity and the stones around him don't, is far from being coherent. Nowadays, I flinch when I see structures in games that either need more support structures or on the contrary, many less. In a way, it's destroying my view of level design, sadly.
I'll give myself more freedom with the "Combine Transport Hub".

A little preview of the map, just in case anyone believed I wasn't working on it.

Kind of a vague compo imo, but whatever, some really nice screens. That dm_Persia map is completely amazing btw--just played it.[/latecomer]

-So if I built a library, could I walk through the stacks, or behind the information desk?

-If I build a pool room, can I jump in the water??

-If I build a cathedral, Can I walk down the aisle, or through the pews?

-If I build a stadium, can I walk through the stands?

I'm half-kidding, but do you see what I mean? I apolgize in advance for my autism on this, since apparenty no one else sees this as an issue... just looking for clarification more than anything.

Now, I cannot speak for everyone but I bet a few of us think you have a crew working for you and somehow you're the only one taking the credit.
Absolutely true, but I never talk about them since people wouldn't beleive me :)

haha, yep.. I'm just hoping to continue this map for the compo, and avoid errors..
When it comes time to final compile, I'll probably be tieing them to a func_illusionary, and then place a func_wall over them to smooth out the shadows more.. :)

you can have like 2 and a half rooms like that before you max out... be very careful.

not even i would attempt somethnig like that. if i did, i'd get the help from some models for sure.

it does look awsome, btw.

It's a batch compiler found here:

It's essential for compiling large maps! :D

I dont know if I will enter it...it doesnt seem to be gaining much 'likeness' and I personally am not very happy with it, only so much I can do with a prison room I feel (using natural lights)...

Bahaha, and when I decide that I want to whip something up I can't find any skinners to decorate my props and I won't have enough time anyway, cause I get home on the 19th ;P - Good luck to everyone from here entering, though.

And assuming you don't map for a game company...
There are infinite forms of mapping. A lot of paths to get to the same places.

Im thinking of entering a little part that I had made for Hostage Situation, since thats kinda on hiatus for the moment. I figured its just to good of an area not to see the light of day for another halfyear

Ok enough off topicness for me today...Too much is unhealthy.
