does ur computer hardware (depending on how fast/good it is) decrease your compile time?

and do most people get their very detailed maps compiled completely during the night? or is it still going in the morn?

Having more ram and a faster cpu would decrease your compile time, however u may not notice it unless it is a large change in hardware. The important thing is however making precise, neat maps. This will result in shorter compile times ;).

The compile programs can be very intensive on your system. Especially the CPU. But RAM also makes a difference too! On my machine, I could compile the most detailed and biggest map that HL could possibly render in about 5 minutes, and that a damn big map by the way!

the compiles for even my most complex maps only ever take a couple hours max. The extra mega super options are usually overly complex and dont really add anything to the map.

I prefer being able to compile my map in a reasonable time over waiting 2 days for the thing to compile and then have to change something.

Agree with Jobabob,
The map I am working on now is reasonably complex but fully compiles in about 2 hours.
To test the entity setup I turn VIS and RAD off and it compiles in about 12 minutes. That way I can check to see if everything is working before I do a full/final compile.

If your map isn't compiling with basic commands in less than 2 hours, then I suggest you throw your 386 away and get a brand spanking new 486DX2... ;)
Or you could reduce the amount of light entities and brushwork and follow Anthony's suggestion:
The important thing is however making precise, neat maps

Being 'neat' is far more important, following a stitch in time saves nine philosophy

i am getting a new 'state-o-the-art' computer soon so my compile times will shorten considerably then

Neat, better planned mapping does more to reduce compile times than a quick machine. (ed:Andy)

Cool, what's the spec gonna be?
