Well when your installing the WINXP drivers (generic) there should be a 28.8k driver AND a 56k driver. NEXT, you have the Dial Up Icon, where you dial up to the net.

-> Right Click on the dialup icon
-> Click On Properties
-> Click On Configure (under the 'Connect Using' box)
-> Make sure the Maximum Speed is set as high as the box allows

Other than that Im not sure. Thats what I did when I was a 56k user and it always increased my speed, hope it helps!

"Query modem" isn't the same as "modem query"...

try different access numbers. I've noticed that with juno :) im on 56k again and it sucks but its free somehow.. I found a loophole...

Anyways, different access numbers will help you out and if that doesn't work change your isp to JUno so you can get free internet :)

register for the 10 hours a month and just connect without their stupid software and it won't limit you one bit.

Sigh

I knew there was something fishy about V92. I bought an external modem for my laptop that proudly states that it can achieve speeds of "up to 24000bps!". So far, I can't get any higher than 28.8kbps.

I know that my phone line already sucks, but I should be getting 33k (which is what I get on my desktop PC). Curse you dialup!

Orpheus is in the middle of nowhere, and, well, so's Ant.

Dial-up is funny, though. In Australia and America and England, at least.

Dreddy: The broadband deals we have here totally suck. As does the technology at the moment. We're way behind other countries in terms of speed.

It's hardly a curse for us :P
The International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector (ITU-T) recommendation I.113 has defined broadband as a transmission capacity that is faster than primary rate ISDN, at 1.5 to 2 Mbit/s. The FCC definition of broadband is 200 kbit/s (0.2 Mbit/s) in one direction, and advanced broadband is at least 200 kbit/s in both directions. The OECD has defined broadband as 256 kbit/s in at least one direction and this bit rate is the most common baseline that is marketed as "broadband" around the world.

Unfortunately Orph, that didn't work: still connecting at 28.8k. Thanks anyway. :)

Thanks anyway. I might take a look at see if I can coax that little bit of extra speed out of it.
Check your download rates. All browsers should tell you the speeds you're downloading data at (IE only does it when your downloading something, not pages). You can get a general idea of what your speed is.

I remember the days when my cap was 4.3, to many years wasting away
