Why delete it, just copy it over to an other database, I think old material should be saved, why? Well, that's my opinion so SHUT UP! >_<

Can the site's slowyness even be caused by exceeded bandwidth usage? I don't think so, but I don't really know much. Anyhow, if it is, deleting threads and maps will hardly help - disabling avatars and such would help though.

Or they could just get bigger/better servers.

They could but lest we remind you Atom is being nice and paying this.

Then how about deleting accounts that have been created, logged in once, and then never used again?
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 15:06:59 UTC Post #195221
They don't actually steal much webspace seeing as how they're never viewed by anyone. Text files aren't big, people - if bandwidth needs to be saved we need to remove images and much-downloaded files, not text.

ZL speaks the truth. Remove avatars!

Ahh, didn't think of that.

But still, if anything is slowing the site down it's most likely alot of traffic on what may be a relatively small server.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 15:32:05 UTC Post #195225
Yeah, remove all those avatars. While you're at it, you might as well remove all the other graphics, too. Who needs a nice looking site, anyway? I say just go with a black and white text only layout!
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 16:30:24 UTC Post #195230
Im pretty sure that avatars and other general graphics are not the cause of this. I'd say it its just a server issue.

Who knows where the physical hosting is? The domain is registered in South-Africa, Cape Town, but honestly, I've no clue where it's actually hosted.

Here's an idea, probably one that's already been thought of, but one none-the-less. Take a crapload of the old threads off of TWHL and store them somewhere else that isn't almost full. Ok, so it isn't an original idea but come on, it would work... in theory...
Posted 17 years ago2006-11-20 08:23:24 UTC Post #203334
All the threads on TWHL are stored in an SQL database (as is my understanding). They don't take up a lot of room.

The main contenders for slow browsing are the site's graphics, and the map vault.
