Valve released yet another puzzle website but to do with Portal instead of the last one which was for HL2.

http://www.aperturescience.com/

They made it into a Matrix type MS/DOS program, so far people have figured out a lot of things but to get you started:

Type help for a message.

Or type user and then enter a name and password portal.

Explore the B drive, answer the questions, don't bother memorizing the 64 digit code cause it changes non stop and doesn't get accepted.

Text appears randomly for a split second on pages and spells THECAKEISALIE so type that after logging in to see a camera thing and apart from that people have found a cake image:

Details here:

Enjoy.

"what is your favourite flatware for eating cake?"

This is hillarious!
"Do you feel sorry about lying about your favourite colour?"

"do you enjoy acts of regicide?"
"If yes, do you honestly know what regicide is?"

"pick your favourite tpye of cake."

edit:

Habboi, you nubcaek!

This looks fun. I'm going to check it out.

I'm also going to link it to my GP site.

[EDIT]: Fascinating. You can always count on Valve to come up with an "outside-the-box" idea for marketing.

Perhaps my conspiracy theory about the TF2 trailer wasn't so far-fetched after all.

yes but when you go too far outside the box its crap, theres hardly anything on that website beyond a simple puzzle. If they'd put LOADS of secret content for people to discover my interest would be perked.

I remember the time before the HL2 release, where if you dug deep in the pre-order stuff you could find clues to a secret page on half-life2.com.
Awesome.

discovered this yesterday :D
heres a summary for the lazy:
1. go to site
2. type 'login'
3. enter whatever username
4. if you type 'dir' you can see APPLY.EXE
5. type 'apply.exe'
6. do question thing.

not sure if it's in the article habboi linked to, but i discovered this, instead of running apply.exe, type in 'THECAKEISALIE' and you get a cryptic message and a 'video feed'

EDIT: it was in the article, never mind :P

Its not that original of an idea. There has been a game going on like this for the TV show "Lost" for almost 3 months now.
Posted 17 years ago2006-09-12 12:34:01 UTC Post #196364
The difference being that lost is shit and portal will rule. Maybe.

There've been countless internet puzzles launched by companies and people behind games and movies, but that doesn't mean it's not a good idea.

Hey, I never said I liked the steaming pile of television feces that is Lost, and I never said it wasn't a good idea.

Very interesting and original..
The cam footage could have been longer, though.

Whilst i hardly think it's original, it definately is... 'interesting'.
Getting all excited about it is rather silly, as it doesn't give a single bloody thing away about the game.

Oh and the 'Lost experience' was far better acheived than this, whilst some of you may not like the show, the actual web game (if that's what you can call it) for Lost was alot more creative than most of these type things, and actually gave away a ton of background information about the show. Alot of in-depth thought was put into the Lost back-story.

Anyway after visiting this site i can say i am no more excited about Portal. I never really was all that excited after seeing that it's all just fancy gameplay and no real story (tying it into HL would suck btw). It seems like more of a giant puzzle than an actual game. But because it comes with Episode 2, and offers some slightly alternative gameplay to that of Half-lLife 2, i am looking forward to it.

Puzzles rock! It'd be great if it was Christmas, warm fire, playing Portal online with a friend, working together all jolly...Man I'd sell my soul for a day like that.

the release date being 2007 might make that hard, unless you get a TIME MACHINE FOR CHRISTMAS

The portal SWEP for G-mod is pathetic. It doesn't have the same feel to it as the portal gun. And besides, G-mod lacks portal puzzles and gameplay.

Portal, really seems to be a completely new different game. But I would buy Team Fortress 2 instead of Portal.
