You have to consider the fact they had constant emails demanding a release so they gave in to pressure...
Besides just copy the Portal map for Gmod over and it's like playing the real game.

If you play the gmod portal challenge you'll also have to copy the materials and models needed for the map(for the cubes) and you'll also have to give yourself the portal gun(give weapon_portal).

1. Its a free mod where as Portal will cost money
2. Its a good experiment for the Source engine
3. Its been released earlier than portal(even though its just an alpha)
