God I hate Steam.

I recently had to re-install my retail copy of HL2 due to my system crashing and some files getting wiped. Everything copied from the disc fine, but when I went to put in my serial number, I was told that it had already been entered by someone else (even though I was using the same account I had previously registered on.) But I still have all the GCF files on my comp, so I was wondering, is there a way to run the game without Steam, using GCFScape or something like that?

Uhhh....

It should be in the "not installed" list.

Just double click it. It already knows you have your serial on your account.

Nope. When I double-click, it prompts me for the number.

Yes there is a version out that runs without steam

Before I bought HL2, I got it (torrent) offline. You could try searching for it, but I dont know if you will find it. I have a subscription to amgserver.com which has tons and tons of torrents in all mediums of computing! You might find it by google. But there is a version out there.

Ostensibly you could do this by extracting everything(and I mean e-ver-eee-thing) and then running the exe in your steam folder.

I'm guessing that would take up an enormous amount of HD space.

Yeah, that's why its not worth it. I'm just saying that ti could work.

i have the same problem, only now my steam account was deleted due to absence, along with my hl2 registry key and a tag on my credit card so i can't just buy it. let alone have the internet to reinstall it.

bastards.

if you find a way, i'd like to know to.

Yes if you pay for games they shouldn't be able to delete it.

Tell Valve for sure. This isn't normal behaviour: when I had to transfer my Source stuff from my PC to my laptop (on which Steam had not been on it at all) everything worked perfectly.
