A friend of mine showed me a site called Mayang.com a couple of days ago. They have some of the best selection of free textures I've ever seen on the internet. The images don't tile (which is easily taken care of in Photoshop), but most are extremely high-rez (some are 2MB in size), and are taken at a relatively straight angle.

Here's a texture I made using one of em:

I figured some of you custom-content junkies out there (like me :D ) would wanna check it out. Enjoy.

I use that one for textures for my models.

You do know using these images as textures in your own maps is illegal, right? Even if just for personal use, you don't have license to the images, unless specifically noted by the author.

I recommend the WikiMedia Commons. Free-licensed, high-resolution photos of.. anything, really.

Or you could just get out of your house and take some photos of things. It's not really that hard to find the stuff you see on texture sites like Mayang.com, although it is rather hard to build up such an immense collection.

You can't take a picture of a wall and then use it for (for example) source if you want to bump map it because it will already have lights and shadows on it - >(unless, you are pro and can do something about it? :S )

You can easily get rid of that Madcow with the levels option in Photoshop, healing/stamp tool/ and exposure options.

As for the sites, they are all really excellent, but if you really want custom content to be personal and match the theme you want, you cant rely on others or other pictures for it once you get the swing of custom content. Its really not that hard to create textures from complete scratch in Photoshop. Its all about filters, layers, opacity, magicwand, bevel and emboss,..............well there is alot of steps, but you really can create some cool stuff with it.

Im actually working on a video tutorial split into 3 about creating a face using polygon extrusion, UV mapping it VERY fast and effective with UBER awsome techniques Ive figured out, Creating the skin from scratch in Photoshop, applying it to the model, and exporting it all into source! And you get to hear my Uber awsome voice too :) lol

Ill post it in the forums, and if a moderator wants to offically submit it, then :)

ZL: If Mayang is giving the textures away for free, doesn't that include the rights to use it in anything too? I suppose credits to the site would be in order, but if it's for free, I really don't think strings like that would be attached...

And don't forget that many of us are lacking in the nice-digital-camera-department.

RotatorSplint: It depends what the picture owners have to say about it. If they specifically allow you to use them, then yeah, you can - if they say you can't, or there's no note about it, you should assume it's illegal.
I quoth from the site;
You can use the textures in your school projects, to make CD sleeves, posters, in movies, in videogames etc - anything where you have added your own artistic effort.

You cannot use the textures for anything that directly competes with us. This includes, putting the textures on your own website, selling them, or giving them away. This restriction includes the textures themselves, as well as any minor modifications, for example, you may not make our texture seamless or tileable and then sell them.

I see...

Well, I'll just won't sell 'em and call it a day :D

Are you joking?! If it is posted online ESPECIALLY ON A TEXTURE SITE, that says "Use these textures!" I don't think you will get sued. Or even in the slightest of trouble, no one cares if you used their picture as a texture, they are not going to be like "OHOH MY GAWD DAT GUY TOTALY STOLE MY AWESOME PIC OF MY SIDEWALK!"

I couldn't agree more.
Making textures from scratch, or simply editing the hell out of another texture is the best way of getting exactly what you want..
Sure, it's a bit trickier on HL2, or any other advanced engine, but the net is filled with great tutorials on texture making/editing, etc.

I was talking about the other sites listed, like images.google.com. Read.

It still makes no difference. NO one would get mad at anybody for taking a picture. Even from google. Did you actually READ something that says taking pictures online is illegal? Or did you just make up something because taking TEXT from someone is illegal?

If you're working for a non-profit function (ie modification usage) then its technically a violation of copyright and they could sue you but it's very unlikely. If you're working for a commercial studio or with commercial intent then you should probably be a little more careful.

I like Mayang and CGTextures especially for my texturing resources, never been a big fan of Berneyboy's stuff. If all else fails, take a digital camera and go outside for a while.

Can someone please learn me how to tile the textures? I've tried but so far not succeeded. I didn't manage even the simple metal patterns. Quite disturbing =( Hate using provided textures in places where they just won't cut!

Use the Offset tool often. The offset tool in Photoshop allows you to offset the photo so that the edges appear in the middle of the frame, allowing you to see how the edges will line up if the texture is tiled in-game. Try to blend the edges into each other using the smudge and clone tools.
From here.

For tiling, you should offset by half the size of the texture and fix any seams that will appear at the center.
