Is it possible to run one of the Steam programs, like HL2 or the SDK, without Steam?

The reason I ask is because I was recently told that a storm in Seatle damaged some of th Steam Servers, and no one who uses them can connect.

Yah, Steam's been working fine for a while now. At least, for me.

The only thing that's still done (for me) is the Store, which is great, now it doesn't have to load a million images.

Had you set it to off line mode prior, you could play now.
Um, yeah, maybe if you KNEW ahead of time that the servers were down. As soon as you tried to connect to the servers, you unknowingly blocked yourself from playing half-life for the day. :|

It's bullshit there is no way to force offline mode if you own the product, period. The "crying" is completely justified imo.

There is always WON I guess. I wonder if people buying HL1 today still get the old WON version? Probably not.

It's weird, I've had Steam since I got HL2 (and a little before then) and it's never ever giving me grieve. Sure, it's had a couple of issues, but they were all fairly tolerable, considering this is a worldwide service.

So either I'm lucky and you guys are getting horrendous errors, or you're crying over nothing important. Your choice.

What don't you understand about being able force offline mode if you own the product?

Even with all the options set to favor offline mode, it STILL happens from time to time that you can't use offline mode.

Like god-for-fuckin-bid you have multiple steam accounts, and you want to switch from one to another while offline... well, good luck with that. You have to authenticate with steam, or you simply can't do it. :|

It's goddamn-fucking bullshit. Period.

Steam does fucking work right you stupid fucking tard, stop bitching and live with it, dickhead.

And wow 300 fucking signatures is going to make Valve change their mind about the greatest thing to ever happen to gaming.

Jeez and I thought you had some common sense.

You do read, don't you?

I'm not supporting anybody's anti-steam efforts you dumb fuckbag--you actually clicked the link OMG.

I already provided one example where it certainly DOES NOT "work right".

The bullshit associated with Steam is completely unecessary and so are you.

Penguinboy...no.

It is rather silly that you can't go into offline mode just by choosing it at the log-on screen. Perhaps Valve can update this...

I wasn't able to map which was a small shame but I did get to go outside and enjoy life...^_-

back to the point, these sites should not be linked to because
1 - they are illegal
2 - having those kind of links discredits TWHL
3 - they are full of viruses
and i directed the sentence to 'all the fucking noobs' because these sites (who am i kidding, theres only one) this site has been linked to several times by noobs on this site and each time the link has been promptly picked up and removed from the post (usually because i have informed them)
if you are smart enough to find this site and dodge the viruses, you are smart enough to realize why it shouldn't be linked to.

Hey rowleybob, you know how I could get a WON style install from my steam files? When I tried to log into the internet, it deleted my cached username and password and I was locked out.

Otherwise, there is one workaround folks. Download Half-Life:Uplink. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,6813-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html And rip all the files from your Steam cache (GCFs) into the demo (You'll jut have to ensure the egotrip when you load up Uplink). Just copy over the entire game - it works.

Yay! Steam is up for me. :)

Question:
When I start up Steam, and my wireless net hasn't connected yet (takes a few seconds), I'll get the can't connect error. But when I hit "Offline Mode", I just get an other "Can't Connect" error again.

Are there other things I must do?

How I could get a WON style install from my steam files?
I don't think you can. If they're not selling the old WON editions anymore--I dunno--, then you have to find it somewhere else--ebay, a friend, etc.

*Checks the workaround out
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-16 12:18:28 UTC Post #206460
Rotor:

Nope. Once you try to connect and fail, you're essentially locked out.

If you know ahead of time that Steam will be fucked up, just block Steam in your firewall settings, and offline should work fine.

The problem is, who knows when it'll be down, and if you want to change between multiple accounts, you're just fucked. (in offline mode)
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-16 12:20:35 UTC Post #206461
So that basically means offline mode is useless, and pretty easily hosed when you do get it to work?
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-16 12:30:55 UTC Post #206462
Yeah, offline mode = fail.

I they could just enter a script to force it, it would be all-dandy :)

I really don't think so, but who knows? :

Well funny you say that because I went straight to the Steam forums once I noticed I couldn't log on and noticd a guy saying something along the lines of using the beta Steam with the friends extension to get on it and set offline mode on...

Offline mode has always worked for me, and the couple of times it hasn't worked is no big problem for me, sheesh. It's just a game, get over it.

As for Steam updating, I don't see how it compares to having to jump onto a browser to download an update for another game. Same thing, same gigantic file size, only with Steam you're forced to get it. Which, I maintain, is better because it makes sure that everyone's compatible with everyone else, which is particularly important with online play and modding.

Now, I have 28.8k people. Not even 56k. I have to sit through the updating. Do I complain? No. Hell, when are you guys not on the Internet that you actually have to use Offline mode? So the servers went down, big fucking deal: shit happens. Take a break, go outside, stop encumbering yourself with petty squabbles when your machine, out of how many millions running Steam, has a spot of bad luck.

One does not oppose conformancy for the heck of it.

As for wanting better, Steam is already better than what we previously had. Last time I checked, infrequent updating, incorrect client/server versions and various other issues were not classed as 'good' things.

Complain all you want, but I doubt that the thoughts of a very minimal group of people are going to do a lot to change what clearly are minor and temporary issues. My "deal with it" positions comes with the fact that this isn't exactly a wholly important issue in life that needs a vast amount of attention and emotion devoted to it, which is why I find your rants and that of other members around here so incredibly inane and utterly confusing.

Besides, who says XP is any better than DOS? At least DOS had few viruses... ;)

XP's Advantages over DOS:

-Web browsing
-Video editing/ viewing
-Music playing/ recording
-Running two and more programs at once
-Has a GUI
-Large harddrive sizes supported like 250GB

Yes, the wheels turn slow and they always will. Hell, take a look at our respective Governments if you want further proof. While I don't say we should all just give up and become zombies, I think that we should recognise when there's a genuine attempt to change things, rather than berate it when it doesn't quite make it all the time. Personally, I feel that if an effort is made, it's better than getting nothing.

As well as that, I feel that we should all choose more appropriate battles to fight, rather than the ones that are easy. Perhaps that doesn't make sense in this context, but hey, you can make of that what you will.

Oh don't get me wrong...I read the news that it was a storm etc and I took pity on the people over there hoping no-one died...

I was planning to map but because it's part of Steam I was un-able to but yeah there are other things in life to do...I was able to tidy my room a little, explore sites I never had a chance to do, chat etc...

But you'd think Valve would have backup servers elsewhere...
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-18 18:41:34 UTC Post #206838
Well, I'm just going to reinstall WON and update the dlls for a backup--for HL1 anyway. I suppose after-all it's not the biggest deal, but it still pisses me off.

I'm also going to try Dave/Habboi's method sometime, so when I eventually install Source again, I'll have a backup.
