Ok, I think a lot of people are missing the entire point of gun control. It isn't to stop every criminal in the country from obtaining guns - as you said, anyone can get a gun if they're dedicated enough - it's about getting less guns on the street and in the hands of potentially dangerous people. No, gun control laws will not stop every murder in the country. But it will stop SOME. And that's enough of a reason to have them.
Damn straight. Besides, its not like they actually help with these situations. In many school massacres, students and (more importantly) teachers who could have used a gun didn't, because they didn't own one of had one on them. So why say "Oh yeh, they're perfect protection against this and other potential incidents" when they blatantly aren't.
Yeah, civil wars all over the place and terrorism through the roof. You guys rock. Maybe it's time to realize invading Iraq wasn't the right thing to do?
Another thing i agree with. I seem to remember an interview with one of former members of the Iraq cabinet who said Iraq was on the verge of civil war. Although, this is another topic, and i won't stray on it again.

I heard this not long ago on the radio, and although it was in USA and didn't really involve us, I was still shocked. 33 innicent, intelligent, hard working people who had acheived alot, and probably would achieve alot more soon, all dead, from the doing's on ONE person.

The same can be said for the so-called War on Drugs
So you say drugs should be legal, like firearms and there is absolutly no use to fight it? No offence but this is stupid. If drug will be made legal each jerk or teenager could aquire them. Now only a fewer number of people know where to buy drugs, and the proof is that if it were a so common knowledge, the police would already know about that... well sooner or later. This is not GTA, not everybody have contacts in the underground. If you ban drugs/firearms you prevent normal people from getting it.

Besides do you know how much it costs a nation to pay all the medical cover for all those drug addicts, just staying in a hospital costs alot of money. That goes for regular citizens owning guns too.
And, yes, thanks to us at least Iraq is currently seeing a little stabilization.
Well if you call that order then yes, from that point of view US' influence has been really helpful to the world... Considering that now that place is in total anarchy. From that point of view Yeroshima is better off like it's now.

Of course it wasn't, and all Americans can see that as clearly as you can.

We all know why Bush did it, for the oil, so lets not say 'you guys'. Thanks

Bush is U.S.'s regret.

President's are just puppets. Lobbies (like manufacturers of war machinery and weapons) are the ones really in control of foreign politics. That's why only some dictatorship's are fought against and others are left untouched.

How you people tied this to Iraq so quickly is beyond me...

With the information that the United Nations had from the weapons inspectors, it was evident that Iraq's government was trying to create WMDs. This was in direct violation of the UN orders that were placed on Iraq after they tried to take over Kuwait (and Iraq's actions there were for oil). With that information, there really is no choice but to stop them from doing so. I still firmly believe that the government of Iraq were trying to create such weapons, as evident by the fact that they tested their own chemical weapons on their own people, building up an arsonal of stuff they weren't allowed to have. I feel it's a good thing we, being the world, stopped them before they could accomplish these goals.

WCD was the one that brought it up. We were only talking about the shootings until then.
I feel it's a good thing we, being the world, stopped them before they could accomplish these goals.
It's not the first time people's real deaths happen to prevent other hypothetical deaths (A-bomb, anyone?). Is it enough to justify it? I really don't know.

The situation of Iraq can be said in a single saying: Out of one hole and into another.

Anyway, this is getting off topic.

So what? US has already in stock enough nukes(not mere chemical weapons) that are ready to be launched. It has enough nuclear weaponry to destroy earth 10 times and send it to en eternal nuclear winter. What is all that in aid for?
Moreover the United States is the only nation that ever used nuclear weaponry, adn they knew whats it's capble of. I do believe i should be more afraid of the US then any other nation. The fate of all humanity lies in the fool that runs that country.

Yes Elon, but that's off-topic.

My view of the event.
A 23 year old psycho with guns was able to murder 32 people who amazingly didn't have a gun to fight back even though it's their right. Wait, guns are not allowed at campus, so that makes the ability to use weapons an advantage only to those who use them for crimes!
Incredible and most of all unfortunate paradox.
Posted 16 years ago2007-04-18 18:53:53 UTC Post #219466
@Jahzel: This isn't about just plain banning firearms. It's about how easy it is to buy lethal weaponry. Do you think it's right that this guy could buy a gun just like that. As long as you got the money, you can buy a weapon.
Posted 16 years ago2007-04-18 20:02:30 UTC Post #219473
It all comes down to this basic situation

This is fact (To sensible people):
The government should allow personal freedoms, so long as those personal freedoms do not infringe upon the freedoms of others.

The question:
Where do we draw the line?
Should someone be allowed to own a potentially lethal tool, such as a firearm, that could be used to infringe upon the rights of another (being their right to life)?
Then comes the question of other lethal tools... knives, axes, chainsaws, even screwdrivers...
I see nothing that is different between a chainsaw and a gun when it comes to potentially lethal. Just because one is a projectile shouldn't change anything. Anyone can make their own bow, and everyone would agree it is ridiculous to outlaw bows and arrows.

Then, the argument comes up that guns are only used for bad things.

This is not true at all...

People who hunt use them all the time to shoot animals. Its good sport and I believe some people actually live on what they grow and shoot. Good, however subjective the definition, people would use them to protect themselves and others. Cops use them to make criminals give up. Hell, even I, a somewhat reserved person who does not own a gun and won't any time soon, have gone and shot skeet on a shooting range (my friends were shocked to see me doing something like that :D )

and please, just calling me stupid because I think people should be allowed to own a firearm really doesn't make a point. I find it quite rude... Where's your netiquette? ;)
Posted 16 years ago2007-04-18 20:13:55 UTC Post #219476
You didn't get the main point, BL.

There are people in europe that own guns too. The problem is in the US is that guns are too easy to get, all you need is enough money. You need to make guns legaly available only to a small number of people, a permit or something like that. This way not every wacko could get his hands on firearms.

Also there are types of guns that should be restricted and forbbiden for civilian use. Mostly sophisticated guns like all the sniper rifles, those new hightech models or just guns like Uzi, AK, MAG, SAW, RPG and M-16. Even some kinds of pistols should be outlawed, the sophisticated types. All those guns can be easily bought in the US, while in other countries I deem that you will not find a collector who legaly own a library of heavy or advanced firearms.

I ment a permit that is actually difficult to obtain, not that every jerk can get. Where I live it's harder to get firearms and there is no firearms market... well maybe a black market.

Then comes the question of other lethal tools... knives, axes, chainsaws, even screwdrivers...
A gun is not a lethal tool, it is a lethal weapon. You don't cut a Thanksgiving turkey with a gun, you don't chop down a tree with a gun etc.
Just because one is a projectile shouldn't change anything. Anyone can make their own bow, and everyone would agree it is ridiculous to outlaw bows and arrows.
Just answer one question. Would this Cho guy have been able to kill 32 people with a bow and arrow? or with a screwdriver, an axe? Certainly not in two hours.

Hunting might be OK, but those two guns he used were not hunting weapons...

You should also take notice that the fact that those weapons are available plays a big part when these people plan out their crimes. I keep hearing that they would get weapons from somewhere else, but maybe they would just act in a completely different way if they knew getting and using firearms was a more difficult task. It makes you think.

if everyone was able to have guns at school than a bunch of dumb people would kill a bunch of dumb people. Maybe there should be more police men regulating schools, and higher security...ie:cameras, voice detectors, etc. {And} youl "NEVER" beable to stop people from getting guns and besides, without a gun, a crazy person would just resort to something else like a knife...
Posted 16 years ago2007-04-18 21:49:27 UTC Post #219483

Which would make it easier to control him and certainly not making him able to kill so many people, as has already been discussed.

Also, would he be able to conceal a chainsaw (since Bratty used that as an example) or a bow? I think not.

You don't stab 32 people to death as easily as you shoot them with a gun.

Americans probably want to have their guns to protect themself etc. I can understand that, I'd probably feel more safe with a gun but I wouldn't want every nut out there to be able to easily get one.

You stupid fucking pro-gun toting Americans. How fucking retarded are you? Never mind the fact that your death toll as a result of a firearm is absolutely, mind-blowingly high. Never mind the fact that every other country who has outlawed the right to own and bear arms has considerably lower gun-related deaths than you
As harsh as this sounds, I couldn't agree more.
You should also take notice that the fact that those weapons are available plays a big part when these people plan out their crimes. Agreed.

Personally I think gun control should be forbidden to the normal crowd, guns bring nothing more than sadness and chaos. A normal American civilian has a gun to protect himself against crime and against the goverment when it turns into a dictatorship right? Kinda ironic isn't it, that guns are forbidden at schools when someone not obeying the rules can still get into school with a gun and shoot people, and nobody can shoot that person to end the chaos, because normal students obey the rules (like it should anyway). And you can't change this rule either, because if everyone takes a gun to school, bitch fights will turn into frag fests. :P
We have the world's most powerful, and stable, government system.
I lol'd.

Well, there was one in Germany (not 100% sure though, might've been Holland) a few years ago. But other than that, I don't think I've heard of any outside the States.
I remember a 14-year old moslim kid killed his teacher because his teacher punished him for not obeying a school rule. This happened with a knife tho, this kid was also instantly mastered after this.

That's not the one i'm referring to. As I said, I'm not 100% sure if it was Germany. But there was a shooting a few years back, of that, I'm sure.

One actually occurred in Melbourne (where I live) a few years back. The gunman (surprise, surprise, another crazy asian) got tackled by a lecturer and student, before he killed anyone else. Sadly, 2 people were killed, and 5 others were wounded, but god dammit that must've taken some balls to take him on.

Not funny.

Each student killed was a person, not a bunch of polygons. Their family and friends nutured and loved them and they were set for a bright future. In just a few seconds, the shooter ended all of that.

Also, i'm disgusted big media decided to air the contents of the package the shooter sent to NBC. It's not like we don't know what'll be in it: the ramblings of a disturbed person. The shooter sent the package to NBC to get attention and he got it.

This is like asking why people make derogatory jokes. You've all made one before therefore you all obviously understand why it was funny. Jokes about VTech are no different. I doubt anyone means to seriously disrespect the victims and their families, they just want to get some lulz out of a pretty lulzless situation.

There isn't that much to discuss about a mass murder executed by some sick fuck, who got killed in the process, to be honest.

It happened. People died. Gun law failed.
