i'm using NO firewall and i've never gotten a virus.

Anyway, from what I've heard the chance of getting a virus is like 1 in a 5 000 000 chance. And I've only heard like half a dozen people ever got it and now systems DO have the BIOS completely separate. I haven't heard from it in over eight years anyway so it doesn't really matter.

Uninstall Norton. All it's doing is slowing your computer down and giving you a ton of false positives.

Hey, I wasn't saying Steam is bad or anything, I've never had it so I wouldn't know but that's just my reason for not having it. I just don't trust internet reliant programs, that's all. Steam quite good as far as I know so there was no need to get grouchy at me like that. I hope Steam works well for all of you (especially StoneFrog).

Everything is internets reliant these days. You can't really avoid it, short of physically disconnecting yourself yfrom the internet. Some programs will always be sending information, whether it's required or not.

I recently switched from Norton 2006 to 2007, personally I found 2006 working just fine, but 2007 is a bunch of crap. I wanted to play some steam games today, and I got the exact same message. Lame.

One thing I wonder, and this might be really stupid, but answer it nicely: So, you can download a FREE virus protector, but why should the makers hand it out for free? They make no profit out of it...?

Because either they're generous people who don't want to make money out of a little program but will willingly accept donations, or the free version is a more limited version of a larger product they're trying to promote.

I find it a little funny that you're asking this question on a modding site of all places. Seems like you might know by now.

Free software generates more user interest, particularly if its good. AVG also has a professional version of their virus scanner, as does Ad-Aware and ZoneAlarm. For the most part, the free versions are quite adequate. They also generate revenue from advertising on their websites and so forth. However, some users simply write software for the heck of it: people map for the very same reason.

Maybe it's better to make a exeption for just those files Norton is risky about. Cuz' it's about the same for every game. temp/eNUMBER.tmp.

There is only ONE virus (excluding it's variants) that can actually damage your computer and that's the CIH virus, which corrupts a number of BIOS upon it's payload, though usually it'll only be able to overwrite the BIOS on Intel 430/440 chipsets (think Pentium Pro/Pentium II era). Personally I went without an antivirus for well over a year (though still checking manually every now and then for suspicious registry/disk/thread activity with ProcessMonitor from the excellent Sysinternals) and had absolutely NO problems. Antivirus software is a precaution, not a solution to stupidity. Unless you got infected with CIH, saying a virus ruined your computer is utterly fucking stupid, and even then, you haven't "ruined" your computer, you can quite easily hotswap BIOS chips and flash them in another computer.

Current Norton Antivirus is generating a false positive for a Trojan virus in all Source games after the last Source update. We have contacted Symantec and filled out all of the necessary documentation for them to update their virus definitions to resolve this issue.

Until their virus definitions are updated to recognize Source games as a non-threat, you much disable Norton Anti-virus in order to play a Source game. We apologize for this inconvenience. We expect Symantec to have this resolved in two to four business days.

To m0p: Few people try to fix a "slow computer." Even fewer would try to recover from the CIH (Chernobyl) virus.
