  • Insufficient memory
  • Damaged .vmf file
  • Map too complex
  • Dodgy RAM
How much RAM memory do you have installed?

i have 1.18 ram.
that couldn't be the cause, my map compiles very fast so it shouldn't be too complex.
  • if my computer shuts down while i am in hammer, could that damage the .vmf file, and if it is damaged, is there a way to fix it?

1.18 RAM? Care to add a unit to that? 1.18 Gigabyte ram is quite impossible, so try again. The compilers don't really require that much RAM (iirc), but Hammer likes eating away at it in order to display all those textures and shit.

And no, your map will likely not be "damaged" by the computer shutting down.

Try open one of those auto generated backup versions of your map (default folder: C:HammerAutoSave).

1.18? EH?
Anyways, perhaps you are out of virtual memory...
But hell, I've forgot where you edited it.
Somewhere in the properties of "My Computer" I'm guessing.

No steam content servers available?

Have you tried removing clientregistery.blob?

I googled around a bit, and at one point I read that this error means that the steam content server gives you this error when it is running out of bandwidth.
But that sounds very weird to me.

However if this is true, then you could wait an hour or two and then try again.
Still the same problem?
Reinstall steam.

Uhm, look at the shoutbox. Valve is doing this. Just don't touch the SDK until Valve fixes it.

From a troubleshooting point of view, it would be a good idea to see if the map will load up on a completely different computer.

If it doesn't then the problem has to be with the map itself.

i'm struggling with this error with my displacement generator at the moment. open it in Nem's Crafty program, and go file -> export and export to VMF. it should work now.

Wait, did Ghetto actually own someone?
Nah, I did in the post above his ;)

Ghetto's screenshot, unfortunately, is proof of nothing (even though he's right). Windows is useless at reporting total system RAM. He probably has 1280mb of memory, but is using 196mb of it as shared Video RAM. (Just a guess)

It is possible to have any amount of RAM. Perhaps not advisable, or indeed achievable with the range of commonly available commerical memory products, but it's certainly possible.
