Let me set one thing straight, when it comes to brushwork and stuff, I choose hammer over anything else(ESPECIALY Quark.) However, Quark may now be useful for lighting,

Quark recently added real time OpenGL lighting in it's 3d view. I am setting the editor up right now, so I can't say whether it even works with Half-Life, and if it does, whether it is stable. Setting it for HL is a bitch however, as it is intended for old WON/pre-Steam installations.

Also, I can personally atest that Quarks 3d View is click able in Vista, so this may provide a solution for those who have trouble with Hammer, and need to use a 3d view for things like texture tweaking.

Any thoughts? Sounds kinda cool to me.

It had a very rudimentary lighting preview system 6 years ago when I gave it a try. But for HL1, why not just compile and look for yourself? It has to be a very badly designed area if you can't compile with cordon bounds and look at it in a minute.

Well, I don't know, my brushwork seems fine to me...

Either way, a clickable view for me is nice, and needed, so I'll probably be using it for texture tweaking.

What do you mean by a 'clickable view'?

I use only Quark for all methods, there are plenty of stuff in there which are missing from Hammer. Eg it shows the connection between the entities, treeview grouping technic, tagging sides, has very advanced vertex manipulation (not so many invalid brushes) and you can compile your map with console options(no need for another program like batch complier), but for texuring Hammer is better, cuz you can select faces in the 3d view(only disadvantage I recognized).

Some Vista users (including me) can't select any brushes or faces or anything via clicking them in the 3d view.

I suggest you to read the help file to learn how to use different tools and technics, like selection, terrian maker, movement and tag tools...and always save your map in *.qkm format, because if you dont your grouping will be lost (in tree hierarchy). I always find new things in it and the developers continuously working on new versions

I suggest sticking with hammer.
