Steam is awesome. I would agree that Steam was crap when it was first released but now its superior.

No Steam = no HL games (Except WON stuff), no HL multiplayer (HLDM) and no dedicated server.

In other words: you need Steam in order to run a dedicated HL server.

steam itself is small. only like.. 605kb It just organizes your games for you.

So download steam, re-download half life (using the WON cd key) [it should also give you blue shift, opfor, and counterstrike i think because you owned the won version)

transfer all your map data to the steamapps/urname/halflife/valve/maps folder, and you should be all set.

And mapping for steam is the same as mapping for won.

2 differences

you have to change the BSP directory, and you can't run the map after compiling from hammer. But you should use a batch compiler anyway.

Then you're installing them the wrong way.
Mods go under the Half-Life folder within Steam.

Tetsu0, what are you talking about. Yes you can. In fact, I just did it right now.

Well, it's a bit buggy (for me.) You have to be there to make sure you have Half-Life selected in the foreground, or it can mess up.
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-19 18:51:14 UTC Post #241531
Eh. I'll just stick to manually running my maps. What's another few seconds after a 5 or so minute compile?
Good time for a bathroom break!

Tets, if you click the Play map button in my Compilator, HL automatically starts with the map specified. It also works with Steam. Just be sure to specify hl.exe in the half-life folder as the executable when mapping for normal HL, the hl.exe executable file in the cstrike folder when mapping for CS, etc.

For WON HL, its always the hl.exe in the Half-Life folder.

I usually get the Cant find filesystem dll or something error.

It works for me.

Strange.

Must have it set up wrong, because I used to get that error too, but I fixed some of my settings and it went away.

Make sure you don't point to steam.exe as the executable. Don't know if thats the cause of the filesystem.dll error you're getting, Tetsu0.

Every time.

The map's in the right place after compilation, all i have to do is manually run the game and the map. It's really no big problem for me.

Wot?

@Tets: Weird. Don't know what's causing it. Oh well.
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-20 12:17:52 UTC Post #241606
Tetsu0, that's a common error which occours when all files not yet have been extracted, OR when the game isn't up to date.
The map compiles fine, it's just the game itself which there is something wrong with.

Should be fixed by starting the game and running a map, any map.

Edit:
all i have to do is manually run the game and the map
That however, does not make any sense.

Basically, i cant toggle "run map after compile" and have the game actually launch. I get that error.
Instead, i just load up half life, type in "map whatever" and run around.
It's no big deal really, i just don't feel like fixing it. :pwned:

That happens on my VHE and batch compiler too
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-20 14:26:52 UTC Post #241617
Under the Game Configurations, set your game executable for steam.exe.
Then, hit apply, ok, and then go to File>Run (f9).

Make sure your on expert compile!
Find the $game_exe command.
Add these params: -applaunch 10 +map $file
After that you may add your other params like -dev and -console.
Found on google, not sure if it works though...

There's a Steamless version of the dedicated server that you can find pretty much anywhere, by the way (fileplanet, filefront, rapidshare, etc). That's what I used for a few years before stopping server hosting all together.
It'd be better to go Steamless in this case. Then you don't have to leave Steam up 24/7, and you don't have to resart your server every time Steam updates.
