I bought a new laptop (yay!!) it has a widescreen monitor but when I play HL it stretches it so it looks horrible. Any way to fix this??

Start HL, click Options, choose Video, selecet "Widescreen" as Display Mode.
A good idea is to use the highest resolution available, too.

the native resolution of my widescreen monitor is 1366x768. I found the half life engine doesn't support this, so i play in the highest resolution possible and put it into windowed mode so it doesnt get ugly...

1366x768? What kind of weird-ass resolution is that? 17 inches or something?
It should be noted that you can't play Half-Life in widescreen mode if you have the old WON version. It's only been implemented since Steam's been around. If you don't have it on Steam, there's absolutely no way to make it compatible. Upgrade or perish.

Yeah, my laptops resolution is 1280x800 (16:10), I simply select wide screen and select that resolution, as potatis_invalid said.

Those resolutions are only avaliable on the Steam version of HL, iirc.
