I think the most plausible answer for G is Government since he really really looks like those government employees and gman is slang for government man.

Also to note that is the gman that commissioned the military forces to attack black mesa after the incident (actually he knew the incident would happen).

From Adrian Shephard diary (Half-Life Opposing Force Protagonist)
"March 7 - I finally saw the government guy today. I am not sure he is a g-man, but he was wearing a really uptight suit and carrying a briefcase. He looked more like a lawyer or insurance agent to me. I did notice him checking me out. Several times throughout the day I spotted him just watching me during training. I wonder what he's up to..."

I don't think even Valve knows who Gman really is. And that's why we don't know.

And the reason for them to not tell us that much is beacuse they can't come up with any cool stuff! Maybe they'll do it later, who knows. But I'm sticking with my theory, they have no idea who he is. And that's why they have him in there, it's an easy way to make us intrested.

Dude 1 "Hmm... Dudes, this story sucks! What should we do?"

Dude 2 "...Just add some dude in a suit."

Dude 1 "Well, who the fuck is that dude? What's he doing there and where did he came from? ...I mean what's his motivation?"

Dude 2 "Exactly!"

Yup... One of the only reasons I can't wait for ep3 is to see something of Gman revealed...

But even without him, Half-Life series would still have been a great success!

Gman has pretty much always been my favorite character in the HL series. I think he's one of the backbones in HL's story mostly pointing out/reminding you that the main reasons for your actions throughout the series aren't just fighting for survival or helping friends, that the results of whatever you're doing go much further beyond surviving the day.

As for who he is - you can speculate as much as you like. I'll just wait for Ep3. ;P

Well the more we speculate, the greater chance that one of us could be right when the EP.3 Launch does roll around.
Then much gloating and "I told you so" will be thrown around. :D
Regardless, Ep.3 should prove epic. And i can't wait.

While it's almost as unlikely as G-Man being Freeman from the future, should we completely forget our baby-faced buddy The Nihilanth?
Which race does he belong to?
As far as super-races go in the HL universe, you've got Vorts, G-man's employers, Combine & Nihilanthians.

This could mean that HL series 2 could cover a universal war between these races.

And i doubt g-man's secret will be entirely revealed in ep3, but his relationship with you, the vorts and the combine will doubtlessly be made crystal clear.

perhaps he's only a single god-like being?
it seemed more so he belonged with the vorts, as he controlled them and the grunts and gargantua (where as everything else was merely Xen wildlife)...

you are all idiots, the picture where g-man is holding a baby gordon clearly proves that g-man is Gordon's penis.

Well it all makes sense now!
Gman pops up and gives Gordon speeches when he gets a hard on! No wonder Gman gaves his little speech in Episode 2, surprise unconscious buttsecks was to be had.

I think.... Gman doesnt have a lot to do with it.
He just wants a massive amount of money. So he's like.. hacking into everything for the aliens and they're giving him money's and he's making sure gordon doesnt die so he can get more moneys

In the end of hl1 you are transported to a few places where Gman is and he asks you if you will work for him. How do you teleport to the various places with him unless he is the one making you teleport. So maybe hes an alien or has connections with them. But to do so he would obviously have to have some kind of power over them to make them do what he wants. Maybe his power is his intelligence. The aliens have to use a human to advise them and he used to work for the CIA and is very inteligent and knows all of the government's secrets and was abducted and offered a deal by the aliens. Than he took charge by force with human intelligence which secretly was much more superior than the aliens and they had no idea. So now he runs everything. or maybe gman stands for garbage man and hes just a janitor that smokes a lot of crack and sometimes with gordon.

Am I the only one that remembers the gman rant about "certain restrictions.."

He's no god, and I doubt he's an alien benefactor if he saved us from their exploding citadel.

Mr. G is certainly an adversery to the combine, not their assistant. Perhaps an agent of a third group warring the Combine on other worlds, as the Half-Life Saga suggests? That sounds most likely to me. He's got leex hax powers though. I mean, time manuevering capabilities? He stopped time on the Citadel as it blew up, you know. Or maybe he just got Gordon out of there, we really don't know as our perspective was rather limited.

He certainly is a cool character, though. Let's hope Valve don't fuck up the great feeling about him in Episode 3 or subsequent Half-Life iterations.

And he's NOT future Gordon, nor is he Gordon's father. Come on, that's a lame explanation.

A character with character and no history creates threads like this. Valve better do something about it soon.
Why should they do something about it?

It provokes interest in the games and in gman therefore more people are likely to buy the next game to try and find out about gman and the story.

I totally didnt read the rest of the thread.
