I needed a change, so I picked an old wallpaper I had. Still a good one.

What's the use of a recycle bin if there's nothing on the desktop to drag into it?

Sometimes instead of hitting delete, i move things to the desktop to get the satisfaction of deleting them manually.

What are you talking about? I never drag stuff into my recycle bin from anywhere. I never "drag" anything period. It's there so I can open it and see its contents.

for any windows XP users.. Make a single folder on your desktop, place shortcuts in the folder, now click and drag the folder to the edge of your screen, this will make a new menu in which you can make it hide... anyways, mess around with it.. Its really handy.

same here, but thats why you use the 'auto-hide' feature. :P

I can't stand toolbars either. That's why I use Launchy. With launchy you never need to use you Start menu, except when you are turning off your computer.
Posted 16 years ago2008-05-08 16:43:37 UTC Post #249741
Yeah! Because the Start Menu is the most useless thing ever, you need a separate program to do exactly the same job, except with complex key combos instead of simple mouse clicks!

...idiot.

I've been using unbreakable's idea forever... it's where my quick launch is, and a games folder. Mini-sized so its prettier.
I keep MY recycling bin there for the purpose of
A.) Emptying it periodically for satisfaction
B.) It's standard and feels as if it belongs there...

So I'm an idiot becouse I don't use the Start Menu? Wow.
When you have over 125 start menu items, pressing the Start button, holding your mouse over "Programs", and then finding and clicking "Steam" takes about 4 seconds.
Pressing <Windows key>+<Spacebar> and writing "s" (without quotes) and then pressing enter takes less than 1 second.
If you are using another program containing "s" more often than Steam you may need to write "st", or "ste", but it's still a lot faster. Kinda like when searching on Google, the most popular things comes first.

The keyboard is much faster than the mouse in some cases, and vice versa.
People are using operating systems without graphical user interfaces for the same reason: it's faster when you know what write.

Spending 4 seconds launching a program instead of less than 1 second is the real idiocy.
Posted 16 years ago2008-05-08 17:41:59 UTC Post #249747
programs you use a lot go on the desktop, and 3 seconds to find a program you only use once a week is nothing. the fact is that you don't need a separate application to do what windows does already.

on a side note: those 'toolbar' things mentioned before that go on the side of the desktop, are ugly and dumb.

Every time I turn on my computer, I start ?Torrent, maybe MSN, and often Steam or Firefox.
I don't want any of them to auto start.
To open 4 programs takes about 4 seconds using Launchy. Using the start menu takes about 14 seconds.
And my desktop tends to get a bit messy so it's hard to find anything on it
Besides, if you want to run a shortcut located on the desktop, you have to minimize whatever program(s) you are currently using.
You can compare the good looking, slow but easy to use start menu and the fast, reliable Launchy with Vista and XP.

am i the only person that uses the window quick launch feature?

What i want to do is print stickers of the program icons and stick them on my F-keys for even better quick launches.

Just hot-key everything. There are more than 30 keys to choose from.

Anyway, this is my current desktop:

I love it how we're now embedding full-resolution images instead of thumbnails with links. People with shitty internets (read: Ant) will love this thread.

New background and [yet another] new theme. Last one was great, but too bright after using the Neogenix theme for such a long time, so I opted for a darker one again.

Heh, ZL's right, TWHL3 only worsened the problem of people posting images without thumbnails. It's only better from a visual standpoint.

@Captain Terror:
Say you have a shortcut on your Start menu or on your desktop, and you want to launch whatever that shortcut leads to whenever you press, say, CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+D, right click that shortcut, choose Properties, and click the Shortcut key text field, and press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+D, then click the OK button.
Now you can press CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+D anytime to launch whatever that shortcut is leading to.
It's a bit buggy though, doesn't work 100% of the time.

That's pretty sweet; i could probably eliminate 10-15 icons from my desktop clutter, and just go ninja with hotkeys when needed. Me likey!

edit: Now you're thinking with Toolbars! = )

You have quite good taste in games, Hunter.
HL, Uplink, GBA emulator, TF2, Jedi Knight, Worms Armageddon, DOS Box, etc.

Can't say the same about your choice of OS :D
