I generally know what a mod is, however, what is classified as being a mod? What kind of limitations are there? I was thinking of ideas but i'm not sure what i really need to get it off the ground. i can map and make textures, but what do i really need?

Mod stands for 'Modification'. Basically anything you do to change what is already there, is a mod. At least that is the way I see it, others may beg to differ.

depends on what you want to do. a mod can range from a map pack to a total conversion. if you just want to add maps, you can do it yourself. if you want to add weapons, you'll need a modeller and a coder (or at least someone to add weapons). if you want to make a total conversion (example: counterstrike), you'll need experienced modellers and a very good programmer, at least.

A MISERABLE PILE OF SECRETS

A mod of Half-Life is basically when you add your mod name folder to the Sierra folder. You put in the liblist.gam or something file and edit it in notepad to suit your mod, and if it shows up in the custom games in Half-Life, thats it. Obviously it has to have something different to Half-Life, mainly maps, models and coding.

MOD = free game modification, because if it's an official MOD they are just called GAMES.

If it's just new levels, I dont' consider it a new mod. It's just mapping.

I consider modding as for having new gameplay, weapons, and enemies.

Spike, technically that's not true. Counter-Strike developers can't go around saying its an independent game on an independent engine, cause it's not. It still is a mod, free or not.

If they would have licensed the engine then it would be an independent game.

Anything that deserves it's own mod folder is a mod, too simple!
