I'm completely new to modeling and texturing of existing models, but I plan to take some time and run through a few tuts explaining how to retexture, and hopefully do some slight remodeling to the HL2-Source engine models.

My question is how accurate is this tutorial for what I want to do:

...and what other tutorials should I look through, and tools should I get?

THANKS!

That probably won't work so well for source. the model viewer may have import/export options in the texture section, I'm not sure. Try the Valve Developer Wiki: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page

To edit textures in Source, you have to extract the vtf texture and edit it to your desires.

Then you just make a folder structure with the same name and put it there.

I'm quite familiar with custom textures for mapping, is the process similar? It's obvious that the tutorial I found here was for the HL engine. What other information can y'all offer before I do some scrounging for info? :D

Why didn't you do that first?

Yes, world and model textures function exactly the same; VMTs and VTFs. The only difference is in the .VMT's code, but since you're only modifying the texture itself, that isn't something you need to worry about. Extract the texture and change it as needed.

I think he means that that's how you edit model textures too. (But don't hold me too it)
EDIT: Beaten with a better answer again!
