The patents are indeed that ridiculous. People'll be patenting things like PRINT commands.

Read the site, ieatmonkeychow. This is not the sort of patent the protest regards.

Unlike copyright, patents can block independent creations. Software patents can render software copyright useless. One copyrighted work can be covered by hundreds of patents of which the author doesn't even know but for whose infringement he and his users can be sued. Some of these patents may be impossible to work around, because they are broad or because they are part of communication standards.

In most countries, software has, like mathematics and other abstract subject matter, been explicitely considered to be outside the scope of patentable inventions. However these rules were broken one or another way. The patent system has gone out of control. A closed community of patent lawyers is creating, breaking and rewriting its own rules without much supervision from the outside.

that's the idea. to stop this patenting rage, you just have to get a patent on patenting! I bet that's possible. too many stupid patents can be made. :(

Its utterly ridiculous, stuff like this. Reminds me of a story!

Story Time

Gather round children, gather round and I'll spin you a tale...
The year is 2000AD or there abouts. We are situated in the lovely country of America. Along comes our main character, a lady in her car, racing to the nearest McDonalds for a bit of sustinence. Into the Drive-Thru she goes and emerges with a wonderfull cup of glorious coffee. She places this coffee on the dashboard and zooms off.

She keeps driving until she is suddenly confronted with a red light! The red light turns its menancing glare towards her car, forcing her to apply the cars breaks. Well at that point the coffee slips right off the dash and into her hands and face sending scalding coffee all over her!!

Eventually she recovers from her horrific burns and takes McDonalds to court, sueing the giant corporation for failing to warn her that the coffee was hot. She recieved $1million.

And that is the end of the story children, run off to bed.

(This story is true.)

well in a way it does. it shows how f**ked up the american law is. it give way to much power to the people who can't handle it or don't deserve it. that's why a certain small group of people creates a very bad image of america. know what I mean?

A lot of small software companies aren't going to think like that, nor are, say, Open Source developers. PHP? Apache? SQL? Where'd TWHL go all of a sudden?

I guess the majority of the twhl community is too young to realize how serious some apparently ludicrous topic can be.

HM, 49 replies and about 70% do not refer to the topic or are just plain stupid. Why do all the intelligent threads die in this forum? All this patenting shit can and will hurt innocent people only, do something!
