I am reading "Daemon" by Daniel Suarez right now.

It's a taut mystery thriller. It's on par with "The Da Vinci Code". In fact, you can think of this book as the Da Vinci code for gamers.

The story centers around a game developer that makes multiplayer online games. It's like Blizzard with an evil twist.

I think all serious gamers should read it.

It's also a good program for mounting virtual discs. Seriously though, I had not heard of this book, but it sounds... interesting. Da Vinci-like thriller involving gaming as a plot twist? Unexpected!

I'll look into it. I loved The Da Vinci code, and Angels and Demons.

I can't be bothered to go out and look for it.

If you could buy a book online, and have it instantly sent to you as a text file or something, I'd gladly read it.

Look at me, I'm gonna be the death of books forever. D:

I am reading chapter nine right now.

It has the best literary description of a first-person deathmatch game I have ever read.

My adrenaline is still registering at 110%.

It's like getting a virtual adrenaline boost pack.

You gotta read this book!

I wrote to the author, Daniel Suarez. To my surprise, he actually wrote back!
Hi satchmo,

Thanks for your kind note, and I'm glad you're enjoying Daemon so far.
I found your web site quite interesting, and I imagine your kids are relieved to have a parent who understands the appeal of gaming. Personally, I've long thought that modern games develop several critical skills in young people (when done in moderation) -- including team work, split-second decision-making, prioritization, etc, etc. But since I have no children, I'm careful never to express that opinion in front of someone else's kids.
BTW - I hope you're right about Daemon making a good movie because we optioned the film rights to Paramount and Walter Parkes a little while back. I'm hoping they do an excellent job with it.
Thanks again,

Daniel Suarez

I finished the book. It was a great read.

And the author even thanked Tom Leonard at Valve in the acknowledgment section.

Proof that he indeed is a game ^_^.

Sounds like a good book, did the author wrote more stories with the same subject(gaming)?

"Daemon" is his first book.

A sequel, called "Freedom", is due in 2010.

You can get a preview of the sequel online.

So THATS what it does! (My family is using my brother's PC while he's at university)
On topic: The book seems like a good read, If I see it in the bookstore I'll be sure to pick it up.

I was trying to come up with the cast for the "Daemon" movie.

Clive Owen would play Peter Sebeck.

Halle Berry would be Dr. Phillip.

Edward Norton could be Matthew Sobol.

I can't think of a good candidate for Gragg yet. Someone youngish.

Yeah, she is ugly and talentless... Killed the Storm for me in the X-Men movies....(not that they were anything great anyway but..)

Just read Daemon already. You'll see how evil is re-defined.
