Fear unwrapping no longer!
Ever since blender developed smart unwrapping tools, the open source software has been on top with that aspect, until the technology and scripts were exported out. There are several plugins for the wide variety of 3D packages out there, most cost money, some are children of Blender's dynamic LSCM Unwrap.
I have one for 3DS max, but it doesn't work as clean as I hoped, and it still requires some man-handling to fit stuff, or prevent it from crashing. Exporting to Blender is weird because launching the whole program for that was sucking up my ram, and then I have to navigate through Blender's interface. Wah.
The best unwrap solution I've found was presented to me by a friend, he shown me the Roadkill UV Unwrap Tool! It has plugins, but it is stupendously good as its standalone program. A light-weight tool that is ergonomic, simple, and is better than the other plugins. Why? Because it took a few steps above the smart unwrap from Blender by improving upon it and making things automatically organize, reorganize, and reorient as you unwrap you're imported OBJ file.
Best part, its fuckin free.
TRY IT!
