I found out about this new city simulation game yesterday, and as a city simulation player like myself (think SimCity), it got my attention.

It's pretty much like SimCity, but it doesn't play like SimCity.
You start by looking at an Earth-like planet. You'll have to decide where you want to begin building your city. This is important later in the game, as you can actually trade goods with neighbouring cities. In Multiplayer mode, those cities are actually controlled by other player from around the world. This is interesting, but requires a monthly fee.
When you've find a suitable location for your metropole, you can start laying out zones, like in SimCity. There are Residential zones, Commercial zones and Industrial zones. You can specify which type of Residents, Commerce or Industry may build there.
Once you start growing, you can build highways and railroads and connect to other cities.
And the best part is: the zoom level. You can zoom all the way in to street level (think Google Street View). You can also fly around like noclip mode.
This has serious screenshot making potential.

All the information above is from the many video's i've watched on the official Cities XL site: http://www.citiesxl.com/

Here some screenshots:

As a fan of many Sim games, including the SimCity series, I have to say I'm pretty interested in buying this.

I don't know why but I'm not entertained anymore by these games. From my point of view, they're meant to be 2D.

For example, I loved Caesar3, so it was natural that I tried Caesar4. I uninstalled it after 30 minutes of play. That's the same thing with Simcitty4 ( I didn't play too much SC3 , but I played lots of SC2000).
I think this game is just another bullshit simulator. Oh well, to early to say this though. But I'll read a review some day.

I started back in the time of SC2000. I didn't understand what the heck was it about or even how did it work, and I got terribly frustrated that I wanted to place buildings and the only thing I was seeing was coloured rectangles.

Then came SC3000. I still didn't have the slightest idea on how to make it work, until someone insisted that I waited some time after placing the coloured rectangles. The buildings slowly began appearing and I started to like it. Still, I had no idea how to play and so all my cities went bankrupt in mere months.

When I was starting to get it, SC4 came around. I was absolutely thrilled and I still play it (and none of my cities have gone bankrupt in quite some time).

Now Sim City has taken a different direction and I'm not interested in the latest version. Now I see this... and it looks very promising. Except that I imagine I'll need about 10 concurrent quad-core processors to handle everything I see in those screenshots. I'd totally try it, out of curiosity at least.

Why?

Because you have to pay a monthly fee for Online play.

Right. If only it could run on LAN, right?

It's an interesting game but I don't like the direction the developers took with it. They asked large SimCity communities for their suggestions and opinions, and then took some elements that should have been part of the game (rail, bus, subway networks for example) and took them OUT of the singleplayer solo game, and made it so you have to play part of the online game to take advantage of them! It's like asking a dedicated fanbase for things that they want and then deliberately taking them out and making them pay a monthly fee just to use them.

I bought the regular edition of the game out of curiosity but I think I will end up going back to SimCity 4 after a short time.

Its annoying, because i was totally gonna buy this game.
Also, it appears many users suffer from issues like not being able to register their game, not being able to update their game and not getting any support from the developers.

And what's new? Wait... did you mean "legal" users?

That situation rings a bell.

@Rimrook. Also spot identical buildings, that annoys me the most.
Posted 15 years ago2009-10-13 10:45:58 UTC Post #274341
LOL. Some of the buildings will ultimately have to be the same.

This is just the next installment for Monte Cristo and their lame attempt at simulation software. I didn't like City Life so I doubt I will like this either.

I have to agree with Striker! These games really do get 2 dimensional after awhile. So, I guess I am kinda jaded with my opinions. Sorry!

Doesn't really have that replay ability like say, Left4Dead. I have been playing it alot lately. I like Zombies, sue me!

ps. on a side note, Zombieland really kinda blew chunks but I guess that's for another thread.
