I am building a new desktop for one of the nurses.

She is going to use it to watch Netflix movies, surf the net, and prepare PowerPoint presentations.

Her budget is under $1,000

This is the list that I come up with so far.

Add about $100 for Windows 7, the total so far comes out to be $845.

Any suggestions?

A bit of an overkill with the processor and GPU for her needs, imo. She'd be fine with an older, cheaper dual core model, same for the GPU (geForce 7/6 series?).

The rest looks reasonable.

$845... Ya I got a suggestion. Its for a nurse. Tell here to get a bundled pc at walmart with at least 3gbs ram instead of two. That would probably run here about $7-800.
Shes a nurse, she doesn't need a custom built computer.

To prove my point, have a look;

Specs are much better than what you have found, and for cheaper.

But if she gets a mass-produced desktop, I don't get to build something. :P

I'll ask her again, giving her that option at least.

I swapped the CPU to this one, and the graphics card with this one.

Now, the price tag is $750, and with a 23" display and subwoofer sound system.

It sure beats the WalMart model, and it's $660 before tax and shipping.

She changed her mind.

She's just going to buy something cheap from WalMart.

Oh well. I don't get to build something.

She made the right decision. Really Satchmo, I can't believe you'd let somebody get ripped off like that just to give you something to do. :\

It's kind of selfish.

Eh, there's always some kind of catch with prebuilt computer packages. Satch was pushing for the right thing, I think.

The only catch I can see is preinstalled software, but a lot of people view that as a good thing, instead of just being bloatware.

And the case being riveted shut. Or does that only happen to people that ask me to fix their computer?

All my systems have been built by my Dad, Bro-in-law and myself. The only pre-built one I have is the laptop I got for my fianc?e. When it was delivered I promptly loaded it up and deleted half the crap that came on it.

I think I can build an economical desktop from scratch with specific emphasis on certain hardware that is most suitable for the user.

For example, the computer that I was going to build for her has a 23" LCD plus a 2.1 speaker system.

Try to get that setup for less than $660 from WalMart.

Eh, you might be able to actually. They make a lot of cheap-o "media-center" oriented PC's like that with less than spectacular hardware for people who don't need it. In fact I bet I could walk into my local Best Buy any day and come out with a system like that for around $500, but I can't guarantee that.
