This thread is an assay on the ability of internet users to maintain a steady, logical stream of conversation. It has been shown that typical internet users are unable to maintain a consistent conversation on a single topic (for example, a thread made by a new member to introduce himself somehow turned into a discussion on English grammar and top hats.)

The first person to post can start up a single topic, or discuss this experiment. Let's see how long the consistency of the conversation lasts. I'd say...less than ten (10) posts.

The topic is now Pok?mon. My first Pok?mon was Bulbasaur. I've never liked Bulbasaur or its family. The only grass Pok?mon I like is Tropius.

You'd be better off just looking through other threads if you want to make a statement about consistency on the internet.
Outright telling the users that you are using them as guinea pigs kills the validity of your results.
The first person to post can start up a single topic
You were the first person, and by introducing your experiment, you've set the topic to be discussed.

I never had a favorite Pokeman. I did however finish the GBA Game.

Edit: I think Soup Miner just fell for the trick. He just changed the subject to complaining about the validity experiment, thus proving his point. Myes?

"This topic fails, your first post's validity fails, but i just made it valid by posting this."

Good job.

And no, there never will be a consistent topic on the internet.

All I'm saying is that when you tell the subject what you're looking for, the subject becomes inclined to act abnormally for the sake of the study. That's not valid research.
Posted 14 years ago2010-08-12 21:21:06 UTC Post #284151
I first played Pokemon Blue when I was about six. My favorite starter (and indeed, my only starter) for blue has always been Squirtle, and the same goes for Leafgreen. In Silver I chose Cyndiquill, and in Diamond (see the gap?) I chose... One of the new ones. I can't seem to remember which.
Offtopic: This is how a dedicated forum member gets a thread back on track.

I agree with soup miner whole heartedly, you told us about the experiment in the first post technically rendering any data you collect in this thread inconsistent to regular forum posting trends. Should have done a blind testing instead of telling us in the first post.

edit: for the sake of the thread, my first pokemon was squirtle.

Double edit: this thread is now about how OP screwed up his research.

Damn, you people take your forum-research seriously. Is this all part of a giant survey? Is TWHL just really a front for the American Journal of Clinical Psychology? :o

On the pseudo-topic:
The only real experience I've had with Pokemans is in the Smash Bros. series. Damn Jigglypuff. Worst unlock ever.

On the real topic:
I kind of agree with Soup Miner, but it's funny that discrediting this experiment also, somewhat, helps him prove his point.

...
Truth be told I just wanted to use the 'pseudo' prefix in a post.

To say that it can be discredited or credited this way isn't fair to begin with.

If the survey succeeds, the results aren't valid, but if it fails, it could just as easily be because the survey taker set it up to fail and is therefore still invalid.

Nothing can be proved or disproved by doing this.

I'm starting to think you guys who are attempting to dis-credit it are only helping so much more in validating his point, you already did in your first post, but now you continue in proving his point.

And so do i, i suppose, but whatever.

Oh well, the topic was either a success or a failure, depending on how you look at it.

In yellow, my first game, you have no choice but to get pikachu, and in all the other games, I went for the fire pokemon ie Charmander and Cindaquil.

On the topic of the research, Soup is right.. but then again everyone is going off topic even though they know they're not supposed to, possibly proving that humans always want to do what they're not allowed to.
The main reason people are still posting about their pokemon as it allows them to be nostalgic for a couple of minutes, and they feel obliged to keep the thread going for the OP and TWHL, as Jeff said.
But we can still see that everyones going off topic even though they weren't supposed to, so you can see what the OP was trying to prove.

Once again I agree with soup miner. We may be giving him valuable substantial data, but it's all null and void really, I wouldn't have said it, had he done his research correctly.

If you really cared about it so much, you would stop posting and contributing to the point you're trying to dis-credit.

The whole point of my post is that it doesn't support his research... How can you miss such a basic point?

edit: also too MANY video games.
Posted 14 years ago2010-08-13 01:58:15 UTC Post #284173
You're contributing to his point that people can't have a civilized discussion on the internet without it straying extremely far from the original topic, turning into a flamewar, or etc.

How can YOU miss such a basic point when you're contributing to it?

Maybe if 2manyvideo games was smart enough he would have just surveyed samples from other old threads, from different websites, who's users differ in terms of demographics. Judging by his alias he probably frequents forums which pertain to gaming, which from my experience means he's going to be researching a group of competitive young males who strive for an elite title.

edit: for crying out loud crollo, I'm just going to completely ignore your post as you are just ignoring mine.

  • Super Smash Bros Brawl is an awesome game, and is a must for the wii.

Potatis reminds me of my girlfriend's little brother who has tourettes and ADD issues. He loves pokemon with everything he is, but alas has no friends because he plays wii and DS all day.

He's a little brat as well, and whines and cries way too often to be a 10 year old.
He needs to be out getting laid like the rest of our youth. Isn't that what kids do now days?

I don't know just sayin'.

Ahaha, that's actually half me. Or one third. I like Pok?mon (but not enough to call myself a fan and I'm not obsessed with it). I have ADD, I have obsessions but not Tourette's. I have a big sister (although she's "only" my half sister). I play DS but I don't have a Wii. I guess the only major differences are that I do have friends and I'm not 10 years old. And I'm not whiney... am I?

Hey, that's an idea. We should all explain our avatars, if they're at all vague.

My avatar has changed a couple times in the last few weeks, but they have all been large creatures from Monster Hunter Tri. At the moment it is a Diablos, one of the coolest lookin' imo.
Bigger pic? And another?

EDIT: Ironically, it's one of the very few I haven't killed yet.
