How much longer will this site be up for? the Valve-erc forums just went down. http://www.chatbear.com/unity2/12/unityhome?v=flatold&g=14
No longer with us. I only know this site and snarkpit for HL modding resources. The HL modding community may come to an end as we know it

There are plenty of Half-life and related mod editing sites still around, and i think this site will have some longevity because it seems more based on socializing than actual mapping.

Btw anyone know how SnarkPit is doing? i haven't logged-in there in ages..

Oh thats a pity, Chatbear is no more. That sucks.

Well, at least we're here, and we're not going anywhere. And we do have an archive of the VERC tutorials...

We need to get some Source tuts in here, though, or we'll be obsolete soon...

It's slightly unfortunate, but I never really utilized the VERC forums for much anyway. They were practically dead by the time Chatbear shut down, anyway. VERC was a much greater loss, there was just so much great information, and images, which may never be recovered.

I like to believe that Penguinboy's version of TWHL from not too many years ago is fairly solid.
Right Penguinboy?

Right?

So much for spirit of half life.

And i was going to use 1.8 for my mod, looks like I'll still be using 1.4.

I was kind of surprised it went down just like that. In any case, I'm glad there's still other Half-Life modding sites (like this one) that I can migrate to.

I have 1.8a1 + source code. I'll upload it somewhere when I get home.

I plan on proposing a tutorial on "advanced NPC control" after the compo is done and after i can get a better feel for the AI logic.

The stuff i've done in my maps i had to figure out for myself via trial and error and the VDC wiki.

So i hope to write some more tuts as to save someone else the pain and wasted time i went thru :)

Crollo: http://www.goannasvencoop.com/sphinx/FTP/mods/spirit_of_half-life/ Though I recomment 1.5a4, 1.8 has sparks in random places that I'm starting to think is whenever and entity is triggered. Even when developer is set to 0.

No, you must map until your 80s. Or for 80 years. Whichever comes last.

If you think about it, TWHL has been a lot more successful than a lot of other sites that everyone ended up leaving after 3 or 4 years. It's not profitable, its userbase hasn't really increased much (just as many people cease to come here as join, it would seem), but it's a real wonder how we've successfully entertained so many people for so long...

Wow, I had no idea Unquenque was still in the HL mapping/modding business. I remember reading your map reviews on Ten Four back when that site still made updates.
Posted 14 years ago2010-09-01 07:20:22 UTC Post #284817
TWHL will survive. Because it's about half-life, not about hl1 and hl2. Which means that when hl2:ep3 is released(with new engine updates ofc, hmmm...I think, NO, VALVE WOULD BETTER UPDATE THAT ENGINE) we'll have new subjects to discuss of. And then HL3 and so on.
And about 5-10 years in the future there will be a hl1 mapping explosion as a lot of us will be nostalgic, it will be the first "vintage" mapping trend :).

TWHL is the titan of all mapping sites. Probably because it was founded in South Africa? :glad:

wakka wakka ee eee... cuz this Africa!

Ahhh... I suddenly got a feeling that makes me go and map :D.
Oh, and don't worry about the health of this site. After all, we have satchmo around :P.

As long as GoldSource, Source and all their modifications exist, so will TWHL.

Hence the name "The Whole Half-Life".
