Greetings TWHL, Hope this forum is still active. I have tried to search the forums for an answer to my ??? but search brings up no answer. I have made maps for cs 1.6 before and i am now getting back at it.

I cannot change the cl_skyname. It comes up the default 2desert. I have changed it to every skyname i can find. Even the ones in the my env folder and the default desert still comes up. Can anyone explain this error to me. Thank You

Browse for a skybox in Hammers texture editor that you like the look of and make a note of one of the faces, eg "skybox/sky_day01_01ft"

Go to the Map tab, click on Map Properties and where it says "SkyBox Texture Name" enter "sky_day01_01"

This was done with HL2 in mind, so a CS skybox texture will be different, but the same principle.

I have tried that, still come up default sky. But how do you find a skybox in hammmer 3.5? I am not using hammer 4

http://twhl.co.za/tutorial.php?id=6

The complete sky list is in that tutorial, follow it step for step.

Don't use cl_ . The editor's a bit outdated in that while it still says to use it, (a callback to when it was a general Quake editor) it doesn't use or require it. If you want a skybox, just name it without cl_ and it should work.
Welcome to TWHL!

I had already downloaded this tutorial and attempted to change the cl_skyname in the tut. Tut has morning as cl_skyname but comes up 2desert when compiled. Tried to change to several names in the list from the tut and still the sky will not change. I just tried it on a friend of mines comp who i am teaching and on his comp it will not change either. Strange

I thought it was bad mapping to create a hollow box for sky purposes? I have read many many the TWHL tutorials and and forum pages. This is a great website for teaching one to map. My compliments to you all. But this problem has me perplexed. Thanks again

just name it without cl_ and it should work.
did you try this? And that link isn't a download, it's on site. All the names of the skies are there. Have you tried others?

Yes, i never use the cl_ in the name. I have tried many from the list on the tut. I have tried many from my grx/env folder. None will change the sky. Is there a way to code the sky name in?

This is most likely some sort of name mixup.
The easiest way to determine what's going on would be to upload your map to the problem vault and have someone take a quick look at it (and maybe compile it and test it on their end to see if they get the same problem).

No offense, but I'd bet money that it's just one of those simple problems that are so easy to overlook.

What is the exact name of the sky you are using?

Edit: Also, if you're working with CS, I would highly recommend you use GCF Scape to browse your GCF packs in your SteamApps folder. You'll find all the default skies in cstrike/gfc/env. And remember that CS also shares files with half-life.gcf.
GCF Scape is a great tool to have, either way.

You're assuming he's using Steam CS.

The alternative is to open pak0.pak with PakScape.

Ok, let say for this purpose i am using the enviroment map tutorial that i downloaded from this site. So you have the map. I have unpacked both GCF's from half-life and counter strike. I have used the following names testing cl_skyname change. I am using Steam CS.

CS GCF
backalley - badlands - blue - city1 - cx - de_storm - Des - doom1 - DrkG

Steam cstrike/gfx/env
3dm747 - 3dm_bikini - 3dm_stuka - arizona - ark1 - ba_moonlg - bahrain

Half -Life GCF
alien1 - alien2 - alien3 - black - city - cliff - desert - dusk - morning

Just name a few.

Make sure the rest of your map is error free. Check the compile log for errors. If any errors occur during the hlcsg or the hlbsp stage the bsp file never gets updated and you keep looking at an old version everytime you run the map to check your sky.

You're right. I am.

Post your compile log, we never get to see those anymore.
