One thing to keep in mind is that Source is designed to run on any computer you throw at it
You mean source 2006 which has been 100% dropped by now. Oh sh-

I'll have to agree with Joebama though, i prefer goldsource to source in the sheer fact of simplicity, it's alright to say source is a great engine, because it really is, but to say it's better then goldsource often sends the message that goldsource isn't worth using and that's where the problem starts.

Y'see, the whole problem with this argument is that "best" isn't being solidly defined. Some people are arguing that other engines are better because they are more powerful and the end result can be of a better quality, while others are arguing that Source is better because it is simpler to use and can give a decent result easily.
And some of you are just ignorant, arrogant pricks. Guess who.

Source is simpler, and other engines are higher quality. Just remember that when you argue that an engine is "better" without explaining how, all you're doing is giving your opinion, not a definite ruling.

TL;DR: Shut up.

I don't think person A should really give a crap what person B likes. I think both person A and person B should drop their megaphones and make some maps. (it is compo time after all)

^^ this

My intention wasn't to spark such a debate, especially in 'post your WIP' thread. With regards to brush-based editing; I'm not arguing against it's simplicity, it's much easier to iterate and develop levels using brushes than it is to work in a program that's designed for other 3D tasks, but the tradeoff is visual fidelity. Environment art development is being done increasingly more in 3D tool sets; don't be surprised in 10 years if the content creation pipeline for most games is done in a 3D program entirely.
"Source is state of the art!"

Oh ho ho.
It is in some regards...please show me an engine that does facial morphs and dialog better than Source :)
Besides my SDK is broken, and judging by what I have seen in the Source community, It's complete shit. Everyone seems to be a dickhead of extreme measures.
again,

That has nothing to do with the engine, it has to do with the artist.

I'd say it's the tools to be honest.
But allowing users like us to do facial morphs is great!

Yes and no. Source is designed to handle high quality facial animations and integrate it into the pipeline (Faceposer) unlike other engines which would require animating it by hand. So, yes, in one regard it's artist-dependent, but the tools allow the artists to simplify the process and achieve better results...

Maybe I could have worded it abit better; the morphs themselves and the dialog are dependent on the people creating them of course. But I would say that an engine that simplifies the process to the extent Source does with Faceposer is 'superior' in that regard, it's much more efficient than hand-crafted animations for dialog in almost every way.

What is all the fuss over anyways?

Source is obviously leaps and bounds ahead of Gold Source and nobody can really dispute that with any kind of information or comments.

Source was just the next step in the evolution for Half Life just as Left4Dead is the evolution to Source.

It's basically the same code--just made better every time to suit the every changing needs of the artist, who, ultimately is Valve, not us!

Me personally, I like Source because of the ease of the input/output system. Not to mention ALL the over improvements that were made in the engine since Gold Source.

Now, having said that....there are alot of people who still like Gold Source for it's simplicity and ease of use. I too liked this feature because I really really hate source for all it's down time, internet hook-ups, and freaking constant updates, some of which are not always a good thing.

I think the only thing I would really change would be the whole open source idea that valve started out with. I really think that Valve has done everyone a great disservice by becoming more proprietary like Apple. And they do this little by little without many people even noticing. And that last update was more than just pushing everything to the orange box. It really did change the fundamental way mods are made which screwed up alot of people who did alot of work.

But there again, the engine really wasn't made for us, right?

Two thumbs up for both Gold Source, Source, and Orangebox!

It's still free for now....

Left4Dead is the evolution to Source.
ONE of the, not the. But I agree, goldsource and source are both great engines. I enjoyed both of them.

Oh, and I have a question. By today's PC standards, what sort of r_speeds are unacceptable in a Goldsource map?

Looking from one side of this map to the other, it peaks at 4600 wpoly.
I don't notice any slowdown, but I have a seriously powerful rig. Is 4600 too much?

Back in the day, we WON software users cannot handle anything over 800 or there will be disappearing faces. By today's, however..

What I noticed with high r_speeds is that they won't necessarily run better on higher performance pcs. I mean, I think there is a limit to what Goldsource can render. Yes, probably 5000 w_poly will somewhat run on a high performance actual pc, and if you take a pc from 2 years ago for example, it won't run as well. But I don't think adding 2000 more w_poly will still run better on a higher performance PC.
At least that is what I observed on my own computer.

Is it possible to create dynamic shadows with world objects (brushes) in the Raven engine? For instance, the metal bars in the third screenshot casting shadows when you shine your flashlight at them.
I remember when I tried out the HLFX demo a couple years ago, I was most intrigued by this, where apparently light can pass through the transparent part of { textures and the textured parts casting shadows. I imagine some very interesting light play could be achieved through utilising this, which in turn would be great for atmosphere.

Hence my question...

Even a sub-par computer should be able to run a goldsrc derivative at upwards of 12fps when standard gameplay effects are being drawn :\

Well that's because they simply don't.

Give me a gameplay video of a intel integrated running half-life at even 1280x1024 (A very low end resolution) at at least 30 fps, if it can't even do that, how could it draw 'standard gameplay effects' at even 1024x768?

Richard is implementing multithreading and a whole bunch of other features to make the engine run faster and better. (The engine is still WIP you know :P)

If it was still the way it is, then bringing a chopper down, would bring basically your whole PC down. But, My PC here sucks, as I had told everyone that my GOOD PC took a giant shit on me 2 weeks ago. So, it's possibly a combination of both reasons.

@Ninja,

My PC could take Source easily. I just don't like Source, that's all.
