is there a way to stop it running at startup nd in background? its just so annoying that it shows me online when im not!

Yes, search around in the options a bit...

Tools -> Options... -> General

Tick the 'Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows' flag.

Or, goto Start/Run/msconfig/Ok then goto startup and deselect the msn program from the list.

Setting it through MSN is a better way as it may reactivate itself otherwise.
