Well, my HD basically failed last night. Just a few minutes after talking to Joe about all the unfinished maps I have and how I should back them up. Windows just crashes and I get a warning when I turn it on not to use it at all except to attempt backups. While now that I'm home I have access to the 2TB HD that I'm getting for Christmas, I want to maximize the amount of time I have to attempt backup. I was planning on putting Linux onto a memory stick and then booting from that, so as to not put undue stress on the HD by running off that. Also, it would help if my accessing my HD wasn't reliant on Windows functioning correctly. I just wanted to ask those who know more about this kind of thing than I do, does this sound like a good plan?
I just really want to back up my maps, the WAD files I have, my Minecraft save (I put too much work into my house to lose it) and a few other minor things. Not much, but I just don't know how much time I have until it fails for good.
Anyone have any better suggestions?

Just get Wary Puppy Linux.
Burn it on a CD, and you can backup anything.

you can run linux off your portable HDD as well or a cd. i'll try to find the linux i booted my machine into to repartition my hdd. It's small, fast and sexy. =)

edit:
In-case you're intrested, I used gparted live 0.8.0-3 with tuxboot. I can't upload it right now but in a little while when i get home

quite right stojkens, i din't see your post! And "racy" version is about the same size as gparted.

Also, in an emergency, could he take it to a Best Buy to have the geek squad use some of their fancy equipment to manually copy the drive, or would they rape him withdata recovery charges?

No prob T man :D

I dont know about geek squad, i did have their programs on a few DVDs, quite some simple things.

But if the HDD is totally unaccessable, he needs to take it to pros.
But i think only his BOOT system or something else is the problem. HDDs rarely just die like that (unless they are a crap model...).

I will try what Stojke said. And I do have a friend who works with data recovery and such, maybe if I end up not being able to get everything I need off it I can get help from him. Hopefully I won't end up being price raped that way.
