One prediction which will come true: 90% of the remakes will be for de_dust2.

What have I done. :zomg:

For those interested in making an es_ map, the official ones (all cut before the release versions, so you can't use any of them for your theme) were: es_jail, es_trinity (a really interesting map), and es_frantic. Look them up for a rough idea on how the game mode works, and possibly a reason or two as to why the maps failed. ;)

Making an es_ map work would probably be the biggest gameplay challenge of them all - it's a really weird mode with no well-balanced maps to draw ideas from. as_ maps are also similar in that way, although more common.

If I get a top place in this competition, The beta key can go to someone else cause I already have cs:go beta.
...and yeah my theme is havana.

So many choices. All the cs maps have been played through the ground. It would be nice to make a map that actually becomes popular. Needs to have even/ fun gameplay. And bring something new to counterstrike.

I have my idea but still may change it. I'll have to brainstorm around and figure out what's best to go with.

I just remembered I once made a backalley-themed map. It sucked hard but I might upload it to the vault someday - if only just for kicks.

Gotta find it first. Not sure whether I still have it around or lost it on a hard disk crash.

Nice to see that valve are being their amazing self , quite surprised they haven't at least heard of us before considering we have been active just after the turn of the millenium , and we do have quite a large database of tutorials.

Indeed, convincing them to give us the keys wasn't exactly hard either. Good folk working there.

Daubeh isn't giving himself enough credit. This isn't an exact transcript, but it went something like this:
Daubeh:
Sup Valve, my numero uno homeslices.
Any chance of a few CS:GO beta keys for me and my brahs?

Valve:
Naw fuck off

Daubeh:
HERE YA WEE SCROTE, I DON'T THINK YOU KNOW WHO THE FUCK I AM OR WHO THE FUCK I REPRESENT.

Valve:
Excuse me?

Daubeh:
I AM NOT ASKING. THESE KEYS ARE FOR THE COMMUNITY AT TWHL. GET YERSELF TAE FUCK AND GET YER BOSSES TELT.

Valve:
Oh shit, TWHL? I am so sorry, exulted one! How many keys do you need? Can I get you anything? Free Portal 2?

Daubeh:
Get off your knees, boy. I only require the keys... For now...

A question just crossed my mind, are there any rules against testing the gameplay of my map before the competition ends, to improve it? Is there nothing stopping me from getting a server up with the beta version of my map and then taking what I've learned from that to improve gameplay and do better in the competition?

I'm not saying I will do this, but I want to know, if this is allowed or not.

You're free to test your map however and with whoever you want. I even think Daubster was trying to organise with potatis to get an official competition entry testing server up for CS1.6, not sure how that's working out. Unfortunately (correct me if I'm wrong) we have no way of hosting CZ or CS:S games.
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 12 years ago2011-12-22 13:40:36 UTC Post #301901
Playtesting is by all means encouraged.

Potatis has agreed to help out with hosting a 1.6/CZ server. Those can be set up whenever one of you needs playtesting.

As for Source, we'll figure something out.

I'm guessing we can change the gametype with the remake?

I.e. change AS_ to DE_, or DE_ to CS_
Posted 12 years ago2011-12-24 03:59:07 UTC Post #301959
Yes. Choose whatever game type you want as long as it works properly on an unmodified copy of the game.

EDIT: Also, the answer was already in the competition rules, I suggest you read them!
You have complete freedom as far as the layout, gameplay, etc. goes, including changing the map type: as_, cs_, de_, es_, fy_, etc. are all allowed.

I'm almost sure I've read you can, but I can't find the actual post saying it. Better wait for the compo owner's reply.

Edit: ninja'd. Yes, you can :P

Ok, here's what will decide it. If anyone can confirm that gldsource and ye-olde Hammer work with 64 bit Windows 7 then I'll enter. I haven't done gldsource in forever and I think it would be neat.

Been playing online in a couple servers. I used to play a lot of deathmatch and surf servers so it's fun to play normal ones.

Yea I play condition zero. I have cs source but when I play it on my laptop it gets hot and the fan runs high the entire time.

I submitted that tutorial four days ago but nothing has happened since :D
Just make sure when you're laying out your map, (if it's a big de_ or cs_ map) to have a layout with three passages for each team to choose from (A, B and middle) and that the map has a middle that can be used to switch between the two objectives, or the same for a cs_map except all three passages lead to the hostages (try not to separate the hostages, think italy rather than havana)... and make sure the defenders spawn closer to the objectives than the attackers, nobody wants to play a map where the terrorists spawn on the bomb spot and blow the bomb before ct's can get to it.

Hey
Captain Terror:I like it so far! It's too bad there is no propper for Gsource..
I wrote a tutorial about this some time ago and posted it to the german thewall-forums. Actually it is possible to create lowpoly models and model-skyboxes for HL1-engine games with Valve's Hammer Editor.

I did not wrote it in english but i will translate it for you. Would be great if someone could proofread my translation of the tutorial, because I'm no native speaker of English.

You can find my original posts to the thewall-forums here and here.

sorry for my bad english.

How awesome Manionsen! :P
Google Translator seems to work well enough; i read the tutorials though i haven't tried them out yet:

HL Worldbrush conversion to prop model, english
HL 3d skybox worldbrush to model conversion, english

Thanks for posting these! Can't wait to try this very-useful addition to the Goldsource toolset! Also if you need help proofreading i'd be happy to help.

Is anyone getting somewhere? I've been spending most of my time with my girlfriend before she leaves for school but have gotten most of my map layed out in hammer. Aesthetically so far it is horrible. I'm determined to force it to work though... Guess it can't look too appealing when it is only very basic geometry to show paths and scale.
Posted 12 years ago2012-01-02 10:48:16 UTC Post #302353
I'm nearly finished with my basic layout, and are starting to input detail and test gameplay with some other people.

So about that idea I proposed, can we have a second counter-strike tournament, but with the competition maps being played, right after the deadline, but before the competition winners are chosen? That way they can be judged on gameplay and we can have fun playing our brand new cs maps.
It can be easily organised, we can dedicate the first 2/3 hours of the day to cs 1.6, and the other 2/3 to css depending on how much maps for each game we have.

Glad to see you're making progress, guys. Let me know when you need playtesting on those maps. :)

As for the tournament, it's all down to hosting the servers for it in the end. If that wasn't an issue, then sure, we could easily throw something together.
