Hey, can I get some help from the community?

I have a purchased version of 3ds max, and I found that the editor does not accept .mdl files. Is there any way I can convert it to something it will accept?

I use 3ds max 2009 64 bit. It does not accept .smd models.

There are plugins to support .smd formats but I don't recommend using them, it's best to do your modelling inside of 3ds Max, and then all the skeletal\compiling work in Milkshape. Much cleaner and better process in my opinion.

Personally, I prefer kHED. It's an easy to use low-poly model-editor for Goldsrc and Source. It imports and exports Wavefront Objects (.obj), 3D studio models (.3ds), Half-Life models (.mdl), Half-Life SMDs (.smd) and Milkshape3D models (*.ms3d).
kHED is freeware.
