I am being Link from Zelda this year!

I've ordered a master sword on ebay for 38 bucks that I will sharpen on my dad's grinder. Yes, it must be sharp so I can chop pumpkins and fend off evil! And I'll laser cut a stencil for a shield that I will build quickly out of wood and spray paint.

I will also use real clothes to make my costume as the costumes available online are lame and fake looking. I plan on buying two girl's green blouses "small braw size" ;) . One I will wrap a belt around my waist and over my shoulder to hold the sword and the other I will use to cut out the hat and sew together so that they match material "asks mommy to make hat". Trust me it won't look as tacky as you think. I will also get some white tight pants and a white longsleave under shirt. And I will get a pair of brown boots, but I don't think i'll do gloves.

I'm having a halloween party out at a camp house on 4 acres we own. It's always a blast.

laser cutter?! i want :|

Last year my costume was simple, i went as patrick bateman(suit, blood on one side of the face, gloves, clear raincoat and axe), but this year i haven't settled on one idea yet.. decisions decisions, though i won't have enought time now probably to build anything too elaborate.

Yea I was supposed to start this costume a long time ago but I didn't know if we were going to have our party or not till just the other day. :) Just bought leather arm gaurds and a sword holder. Now finished with the online stuff.

I rem. thinking last year how bad ass it'd be to build a working hook shot. Like a quad hook that cranked into a spring loaded barrel with a handle and wire coiled inside. This would turn some heads at comic con.

Considers bleaching hair...

no halloween for us Australians.
Apart from a couple of doofuses who think it would be a good idea so they go out into the suburbs and knock on doors and either get doors slammed in their face, or if they're really lucky, they'll get a packet of Shapes.

I'm going to be the drunken master. There are going to be plenty of Halloween parties around, everyone is going to get piss drunk. I think dressing up as the drunken master is a fuckin brilliant idea xD

You're telling me you've never seen The Drunken Master? It's Jackie Chan's best movie, there's two of them, but they have done the drunken master many more times than that. He's been in some fighting games too.

I'm on a budget of $0 and I'm not going to be going out at night this year. So I'm going to show up to school on Halloween as a low-level Soul Reaper: (from Bleach)
1 Pair Black Dress Pants
1 White Shirt
1 Black Kimono-style bathrobe
1 Wooden sword (Optional)

...I wish I still had that plastic katana from when I was a ninja approx 10 years ago. Or a real silk kimono. But whatev.

Damn smexy sir! :o

How does it remove the bits underneath or did you add a back plate? we do similar stuff sometimes at work, but use an opaque projector and then just jig/bandsaw/router/dremel it out, but dang, that is so pretty =P

I can't wait to see it painted =)

Thanks a lot guys! Yea, it's just two layers of wood. There is a cnc machine at school that could do it in one but it was sort of unnecessary for this.

That projection method sounds nice, you could also print it to scale and glue/ tape it to the wood and cut.

I remember one time I to make a lure out of wood I used a hand held jigsaw upside down that I held with my feet and controlled with my toe while I worked it... The laser is very convenient but semi expensive to use.

I'll post it when painted along with the rest of my costume when I get it done.

I wish I went to a school that had all that equipment.

Still, in two or three years I'll have access to the engineering prototype fabrication machines for my final project. I can make myself a carbon fibre shield. :P

And on the subject of the thread, I don't think I'll be dressing up this year, as I've heard no plans among my friends to have a party or anything like that, so there wouldn't be much point tbh.

I still haven't settled on an idea for mine, but it will probably just be a zombie of some sort... in a pinch i will just by a black hat and glases, shave my head and goatee and go as Heisenberg =P

All my friends want to go out as Black Ops guys, but meh...

Actually bought them here. Sounds cool. If I were to dress like something from halflife or something similar no one would know what it was lol. Captain another "easy" idea I had was "death". Just get a black robe and a sythe, skull mask optional. I'd get some platform boots to give it a taller effect.

The breakdown.

Hat- Mom sewed for me with fabric I bought at Hobby Lobby
Shield- I made with laser cutter, spraypaint and glue
Clip on earings- ebay.com
Master Sword- ebay.com
Sword Holder- ebay.com
gauntlets- medievalcollectibles.com
undershirt- Gap
Green shirt- Old Navy
White tight jeans- Hot Topic
Boots- My brother's work boots

I'll have a pic when completed.

Dude if I had a girlfriend i'd so make her dress as Saria or Zelda! Maybe next year :)

Yea heck i'd be samus myself. Maybe when I learn the cnc machine and some casting methods at school i'll be able to fabricate a samus suit. ooo, zero suit is hawt.
Posted 11 years ago2012-10-25 15:36:10 UTC Post #310601
I've always thought that Samus' Power Suit looked cool. It would be a complicated costume to make well though, without having fancy production methods.
And as an added benefit you can figure out which of your friends are gamers from which ones think you're a crossdresser!

Although I've got to say, if I had access to fabrication machines to make good looking, rigid pieces I would be more inclined to make a HEV suit. And while making a gravity gun to go with it would make a good project, personally I think the crowbar is more iconic.

Posted 11 years ago2012-10-25 16:31:25 UTC Post #310602
Ohhhhhhhh, fabricate an hev suit, yes!

And yes i'd never even imagined dressing as Gordon without the crowbar. Maybe dress up a hamster as a snark and carry it? Dude you could make a laser trip mine "box with green laser".

Looks like a few people have made gravity guns. I'd rather have a gauss. Egon might be easy to make. You could get an airsoft gun for many of them.
Posted 11 years ago2012-10-25 20:19:46 UTC Post #310604
I actually got a green laser the other day. It came with the battery charger that I had actually ordered.
And come to think of it there is apparently an airsoft shop near here selling deactivated airsoft guns for around $5 each.
Maybe I will dress up as Gordon for halloween. With my current resources it should only take a few years to make an acceptable HEV suit. :P

that looks great!

I'm not a painter, but there are some techniques you can use to make the shield look more used/realistic by distressing it a little bit.

one way i know is to paint areas of metalic silver/gold/platinum(or the entire shield)as a base. After the base dries rub vaseline kinda splotchy like over top, and then paint your primary colors over it.

THEN, when you rub off the vaseline, you'll should have irregular areas of the metallic colors showing through, as though the shield is a bit worn or taken some damage.

NOTE
I would test this on an unrelated piece of wood experiment a little before messing up your pretty shield ;)

Also, take a grinder/sander/whatev to "rough up" or bevel the outer edges of the shield(and/or the interior ones as you like), to again make it less two-dimensional looking.

Anyhoo though, it looks really good as it is, and these are just some ideas to tweak it if you have the time and desire. Again, great work! =)

Sounds awesome man. Don't be jealous of my shield I practically printed it out ;) I'd have spent even more time on my costume if I knew I was having my party. I want to build a hookshot, maybe I can be link more than once, but with upgrades/ new items each year. :)

This sounds crazy but I know how to make real simple bombs. Just get a spent co2 and empty gunpowder out of a shot gun shell. Fill it into shell and stick a fuse from an m60 in it. I could make paper mache ball around it and have real bombs! Eh, sharpened sword is one thing but this is too dangerous even for me...

Oh you silly americans and your halloween costumes. Zeeba, that one is sweet.

I vaguely remember wanting to have a costume party last year, but I didn't have time or even an excuse. I don't even remember what I wanted to be at the time, but I sometimes thought of borrowing my uncle's police uniform.

An easy one is a grey suit and a briefcase. To some people, lawyers are scarier than anything else out there! :P

Gordon Freeman would be pretty awesome, but I'm not sure how I'd make an HEV suit. Perhaps just having a labcoat as an alternative.

Personally, I will probably end up taking a range of drugs and chilling with my friends.
