Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth. -Oscar Wilde

I like to think I'm usually friendly and approachable online, not the brightest spark but never abusing my anonymity, because I think I AM a friendly and approachable guy in real life. Some of you may not agree, but your feelings towards me as a TWHL member will pretty much be identical to how you would feel about me in person. I'm fairly open online. More than I should be probably. Some of you may have seen my video blogs on YouTube and noticed that I'm exactly the same way there as I am here, or anywhere else I happen to post.

TWHL used to be full of friendly and respectable users, who posted helpful comments. Of course, some were opinionated and biased but at the same time considerate and open-minded, all regardless of anonymity. Some of these people have moved on, some have become good friends.

I certainly never had to block any TWHL users on Steam three or four years ago, but it's something I have had to do more frequently recently. Sadly, a person who acts like a complete cunt on one website is likely to act like a complete cunt on any other website because they are, in fact, a complete cunt.

So...

Farewell TWHL
I'd leave my mask at the door, but I never brought one.

Part of me wants to beg you not to leave. Part of me has seen many, many veterans leave but still keep in touch with me regularly and is not worried about losing touch. Many I talk to every day.

Maybe it's my own absurd stubbornness that has caused me not to leave with the others. If you change your mind, and I hope you do, I'll be glad.

If you don't, that's fine too. It's your decision. I'm going to send you an IRC channel on steam where you can hop in every once in a while to shoot the shit with some of us. You can share it with Archie too.

It's sad to see so many old and respectable members of TWHL such as yourself to go. I quit coming here for the mapping 3 years ago, I just came here to talk to you guys. Unfortunately few of those whom I enjoyed to talk to are still here. Some remain but it's far from the crowd that it used to be.

I won't say that I will leave, I'll probably be hiding in the shadows hoping for better days, but I'm afraid my thoughts are the same as Urby's and Hunter's. This genuinely makes me sad. I've been on TWHL since I was 12, eight years ago, and I've always looked up to the people running it. Atom, 7th, Ant, Pengy. You guys have done a good job, and I'd hate to see TWHL go. But for now, as I said, I will withdraw until better times. Thanks for everything!

Edit: Oh, and if you don't mind Blitz, I'd also love to join in with the fun :)

Wait, do I still have you on Steam, Urby?

[edit] you got it moomoo, you're in like Flynn.

Goodbye Urby. Though I'm saddened that you, like Archie, are leaving us, I hope to see you around elsewhere on the modding and gaming scene. Your skill and sense of humour have always served to brighten my day, and I'm going to miss having you around here.
Wish you all the best.

Ok added you both Urby and Moomoo. I'll be in touch. Cheers. The everyday-IRC-crew includes Zombieloffe, Srry, Caboose, Hugh, Nickelplate, Grim, Weebl, (sometimes Dewdle although he's going to be in China for a while really soon) and others. Hope to see you in there occasionally, Urby.

SAD FACE

Won't be the same without you Urby.

I won't be going any time soon. Half because I'm not bothered, half because I'VE GOT NOWHERE ELSE TO GOOOWWW!!, and completely because I love you guys =(

I've got a bunch of you added on Steam but never talked to anyone except Archie once. I guess I'm just a little anti-social.

I honestly thought this thread was about some editing program masks.

I'm really surprised that you are leaving us, Urby. I haven't been very active in the last week on TWHL and I don't really know what caused you this decision. Perhaps it accumulated in time...

I dare ask if you are telling the whole part of the story. I know that you have a family now which takes a lot of your time and that I can understand, but I can't see how being pissed on some members can make you leave this community.
Also, what about The Core? Are you leaving TWHL for a greater glory? ModDB?

Archie is also gone? I thought he's just busy :|.

I'm sorry I'm not too subtle, and if you don't change your mind, I wish you best of luck in your life.

So we are losing one of our most active members? God damn it. These are sad times for TWHL indeed.

That's the kind of community souring shit Urby is talking about. Go do that somewhere else. That kind of assholishness is completely uncalled for.

Im sad to see Urby go. He's right though. TWHL did used to be a more active and friendly place. Im hoping Valve's new engine will spark some life into this place when it comes out.

Even more sad is that he didn't even went for Source mapping and he's already leaving the community.

Yes Grim. That is part of why so many TWHL veterans have left. The other part is that they simply have either grown bored of mapping after so many years, or don't have the time to lately due to work, getting married, etc etc. That, however, should not be and is not enough to cause a person to leave a community. There's much more to it. The fact that a few still very actively mapping older members barely show up at all, despite not "officially" leaving, is testament to that.

I, like Grim, hope that when the new engine launches we see a bit of life breathed into the site and see a few older members make returns. At the pace we're going I can't really see that happening though.

tl;dr ban people for offensive comments/post which contribute nothing to the site/mapping.

You know what would be a funny experiment? A "Mapping Only Week" on TWHL.

With the exception of the shoutbox, Now Playing and Now Gaming threads, any discussion on this mapping site that is not directly related to mapping by any user results in that user being banned for the rest of Mapping Only Week.

Random political or nationalistic thread? Ban for the rest of the week. Random journal about something you saw in the news? Ban for the rest of the week.

Granted this experiment would take a lot of moderation and its not fair to ask our two active mods to do extra work, but its a fun idea.

My prediction is that the WIP thread and the current compo thread would rule the front page all week, with the exception of a few good "i've got a problem" threads.

At the very least it would be quite funny. We'd probably all get banned.

Blitzkrieg sends out valentine PMs, banned for a week!

sounds good to me mang! though i feel the mods are a little too stiff to do anything that cool/fun, and perhaps with good reason :P

Not too stiff, just too busy with more important shit, like, you know, life. It is Pengy and Grim at this point, lets face it, and they both have lives.

Look what we ended up discussing on a sad thread.
