I just looked at the entries.
You assholes are really creative.

If we ever do this again, I'll make a better base that's a little more open ended.

tbh i really like Captain Terrors map but i dont understand how he won since it was unfinished and mostly copy paste.

I think if we ever do a contest like this again, it need a better judgement ^^

Dont want to attack someone but thats just what i think ^^

I'm apparently a winner. :aghast:
My money was definitely on Lajron, though.

I didn't mind the "closedness," but the brushwork made working with it a bit of a hassle.

Congratulations to CaptainT and Crypt19 for winning.
I just wanna tell you how i feel about this.
This is the same case like with gamebanana sky contest. That's when i build de_newhorizon for 3months and submited it only to find out that a dm_map won.
The half of the map was copy/pasted to the other and it was done in a week and submited it had over 9k wpoly and even the author wrote its unplayable and it still won.
Don't get me wrong i really like the ideas for CaptainT's and Crypt's map but they are both unfinished as everyone can see.
Atom i asked you who won and you said Crypt with
"2:28 AM - A T O M: crypt19 won
2:28 AM - A T O M: like his design the most"
Yes , you liked his design but when you read the rules of this contest its "Your task is to detail and dress up a boring bland base map" which kinda feels wrong that this to won , again saying i really like them both but they as we can see are unfinished.
I'm really not trying to hurt anyone but this is how i feel and what is done is done.

I am with Lajron on this one.
It was really lame what happened on Game Banana. He was at least 3rd place.
But OK, game banana staff knows shit about GS and they want newer engines on their list.

But here i do feel disappointed, he could have at least been mentioned for his hard work by the staff.

Yeah, I totally agree. In comparison with the other entrants, it actually feels wrong to win. Esp. Lajron, his map is easily one of the greatest GS ones I've seen.

I'm sending Lajron the code, so he at least gets the prize! I like that map worlds beyond mine, and find it far more deserving.

Atom put on the contest(not TWHL), so really, it's up to him to choose which map you like the best. He's putting up the prizes with his own money for nothing in return, so to the people complaining i would offer my 2 cents:

You don't have to agree with his choices, but you should respect them! :|

Noone was more surprised than me to get a prize--The fact that I would have bet all the money in my bank account that Lajron would win, made it all the more impossible.

You made my month Atom, and for that I thank you!

Btw, congrats Crypt19, your map would have been my silver choice had I done the judging :)

I'm surprised with the turn out as well.

It's just that I'm thinking, i'll win next competition if I work as hard as Lajron did, but he didn't even win lol.

Oh well it was hella fun and I've made a pretty cool little map imo, got some good gold source exercise. And, congrats to the winners, you had some interesting maps that I would have never thought of my self.

Also, just because you work hard on an entry doesn't mean it's winning material. Lesson learned. ;)

oh guys, im played all entries as well and one word: "awesome"
in my opinion we cant judge contest conditions and rules because its free, and the real purpose to do this contest is inspiring people to make maps, add togather mappers and have some FUN. I enjoyed it and thanks for making this kind of competition
Posted 9 years ago2014-07-21 12:33:12 UTC Post #320547
Well to tell you the truth i worked on this for maybe like a week.I'm pretty much used to adding this much detail in my maps.I have a bunch of maps that i haven't released because their size is huge(example 7-8MB and i've only done 3/10 of the whole map).I'm currently learning modelling so i can switch to source engine.I only decided to enter this contest because i needed a break and it was fun using vhe 3.5 again also thanks to CT you might see some svencoop maps from me soon :)

Congrats to CT and Crypt!
Surprising results though... I don't think I saw crypt's entry though.
I just remember seeing Lajron's and thinking "Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit... I lost"

If it's any consolation, I was rooting for you Lajron!

I agree! I misunderstood the rules until it was too late so I thought some combat would spice things up :)

Good luck with source modelling Lajron, it's a pain XD

It's not a pain.. Once you get used to it, very soon, that is, it's a piece of cake and the importing/exporting is just there and you do it with such ease! I had even started using animated textures and so, but LOST MY HD. -_-

Well, I've forgotten all my source techniques, tricks and modelling, and so, have given up on everything for a bit, especially since I've become lazy and do almost nothing a whole day, and piss off my parents quite a bit, I'm thinking of it as a break.

Heh, after playing your map, now I understand what a truly detailed map can be... It's very inspiring actually to see what's possible in GS! :)

How you were able to put this together in a week, I will never know! :P

Anyone know if there are plans or is a workshop for GoldSRC? Seems like the're still a lot of very talented GS modders out there, and it's unfair they don't have an "official" way to showcase their hard work! ='(

While it is true that CT's entry was unfinished, and lacked detail in some area's, i really liked the way he made those pods hanging from the rail. Crazy detail, great brushwork, even though texture alignment didn't look too great on those but, I somehow like his crazy style. He even knows how to make ugly dev textures look good.
You may disagree, but this is how I feel.

As for lajron's entry, it looked really good but you kinda sorta went outside the boundaries of the basemap. Yes I know they're just inaccessible area's that you can't go to, but still.
Maybe I didn't make it clear enough that you're not supposed to extend the basemap by adding brushwork beyond it. If that's the case, I'm sorry. Hope you don't feel too bad about it.

And yes, I do agree I should have let Rimrook take a look at the entries as he's the basemap designer before I made the final decision. Now that I think of it, it's kinda stupid that I didn't. Again, my apologies.

Even though the original plan was to have only 1 winner, there are actually 2 winners.

I will do better next minicompo.

The rule is actually a little fuzzy...
you may NOT change the geometry/brushwork, however, you are allowed to cut into existing geometry if you want to add a window, a trim or whatever, as long as the walls you're cutting into are not exposed to the void.
A window that may lead to a skybox, or an untraversable section of the map that is only scenic? I had no problems seeing into new areas as long as the playable area didn't actually go beyond that. What I did have a minor qualm about was in CT's map where he added that small tunnel underneath that lead into the bottom of the house section of the base. The area could be explored and was annexed to the base. It could have been easily solved by blocking it off. I think it's been stated in base compos before that the basemap sorta defines a broad playable area, rather than set the exact confines of the map.

I won't make any of my own judgements since the compo is over. Though I gotta ask Cap'n Terror what he had in mind. His was entered unfinished right? Gotta admit those capsule ship things were pretty awesome.

EDIT: Is another mini compo going to pop up here or what? This actually had a little turnout.

I think we should make these official, with this being the first official TWHL minicompo.

It seems to me like a no-brainer to keep Atom and Rimrook in charge of these if we do, since all things considered, it went pretty well!

They don't all have to be map from base, but all short term, and one prize only(plus profile and/or participation medals).

Minicompos are fun, make them official! :)

Rim: Yeah, I did mean to add a connection down there, so technically I broke the rules too.. ;)

What if the winners of the previous compo get to pick the new rules and judge the next compo?

I usually only map for competitions anyway so I'd actually be submitting things XD
