I wanted to create a generalized thread where 3D modeling can be discussed as many members seem to be gaining interest in it as am I.

I use Rhinoceros 5.0 a lot, but I want to know more than just one tool so I've ventured into blender and 3Ds Max.

I instantly fell in love with blender's UI however, just recently I ran into a problem with blender. I was doing a Boolean with two pretty complex solids and it wouldn't work nicely at all without creating a million jagged triangles. "Boolean is basically the carve tool in hammer but has options to join carving geometry or not"

I was able to do it in Rhino very nicely. I've yet to try it in 3Ds max but will update when I do and let you know how it works out.

I also have been learning T-splines plugin for Rhino. It basically converts nurbs mesh which is derived from curves into polygon mesh which is derived from triangles and then is able to convert it back. I believe this is a powerful tool but haven't messed with it much yet.

Please share and discuss any experience you might have so that TWHL can make some beautiful models  .

YES! good thread.
I'm currently learning 3DS max and Blender at the same time.
So i'm learning the same techniques with different ways about doing them.
Modelling is really the same as coding - once you have a workflow down, it's just about learning each programs tools (syntax).

I'm going to import a weapon into a new mod I made using 3DS max. I'll post some WIPS when i get closer to a finished product.

Very modeling, such good!
This might be the incentive I need to start playing with Blender again :)

Here's a very basic palm tree I made in 10 minutes in Rhino. It is to be 3D printed. I will do a more complex one when I have more time.

Does look pretty advanced to me. Maybe because I have never made models before. I once had Blender on my old computer, but it lagged for me. I think I should reinstall it.

ugh, i haven't modeled anything in a long time.

Last ting I finished was a character for Compo33.

Some of the best practice is stuff you do for challenges like on CGSociety or Zbrush Central.

Made a download for that one since I never finished my compo entry. Basically I was happy with the model.

A billiard/pool table I'm working on:

I still have to texture it and add some bling bling. I've just applied plain colored textures to have a little preview.

It'll be available as a GoldSource model, ready to use in any GoldSource based game.

Rimrook I wish you had finished your competition 33 entry, it was coming along so nicely and with that model flying around it I couldn't imagine how cool it'd have been.

Looks good Alberto, except, you used golf balls ;) .

Duke nukem 3d has a cool pool table where you can hit the balls and they move/ bounce into each other and go in the holes.

Thanks Zeebs. Golf balls? Really? :o

EDIT: Wait, you mean for the textures? They aren't textured. xD

Yeah I know, in the second level, inside the yellow card door. :P
But, unfortunately, GS doesn't have this kind of stuff (SoHL probably), and creating a func_pushables and brush based balls is not recommended, I think. :P Also, I currently don't know how to make animated models. So, not gonna happen. :(

Hahaha, I thought about if making it was in my grasp of power as well.

I wonder if it is possible with certain physics based modeling softwares.

I just realized I might have a copy of autodesk inventor at home because I bought a copy of autodesk suite 2013 when I was in school to get 3Ds Max and it may be included!!! :D

Awaits getting home.

Oh and func_pushables have humongous collision boxes so I don't think they would work.

I have Inventor! You know that program that goes for over seven grand... Apparently it was included with my student version Autodesk Design suite I bought a few years ago. It came with 3Ds max, mudbox and some other programs like sketchbook designer.

Just installed inventor. This weekend is going to be delicious.

Rim, I will Dl your model and check it out soon.

i have made a few simple models but i dont know how to compile them to a half-life 2 model format... yes i have read tutorials :|
would somebody write a tutorial to horse-sense? xD
Posted 9 years ago2014-08-15 10:12:54 UTC Post #321209
Each source modeling tutorial is different based on which program you're using.
It pretty much boils down to exporting, compiling, and making sure everything is in the correct folders.
I'm working with 3DS Max. If you are too, ill let you know what to do.

Hang on... I still need to show my latest (back then) AK-47 mod...

Ghost it seems you have some bugs to work out with the player model, but that's great work!
Urby - Definitely GREAT for a first model. Seriously!

Here's my first round at rendering in blender. Re-Working my company logo for a splash screen animation on our touchscreens. (So... I'm getting paid to do this!! :crowbar: )

Looks good Urby, don't give up your a pro.

That Company Logo looks really good Tetsuo, did you use the Cycles renderer?

Nice stuff ghost, what programs are you using?
Posted 9 years ago2014-08-15 16:35:48 UTC Post #321219
Yeah don't give up! That's why this forum exists.
Ghost, I saw those airflow renderes somewhere before. I think I commented then; they're awesome! What program is that?
Also, Zeeba, I'm just using the default render and copied the default light a few times. I'm still playing with materials and light effects - I really don't know what i'm doing.

3ds Max 7
  • Insert a sky light, intensity at 0.5
  • Turn on Light Tracer in the advanced rendering tab in the rendering options.
  • Set a directional light (0.5 intensity also) with Area Shadows on at 0 shadow bias.
  • A back light for a little glare, no shadows.
  • Render.
A little exposure filtering in Photoshop makes it look like VRay. I didn't do that in the above picture because there's no environment.

These are all default render settings.

It's a real product. http://cleanmachineonline.com/
