HAUNTED HALLOWEEN CONTEST 2014

Task
Build anything haunted, and submit your work to the TWHL Map Vault, on or about October 31st.

Could be a haunted house, could be a desolate dystopia littered with crude grave markers, or maybe a secret underground laboratory invaded by creatures from an alternate universe... you decide!

Rules
1. Build anything haunted that's mapping related: a prop, prefab, map, texture pack, ANYTHING!

2. Any Valve engine game or mod can be used.
3. Entries should be your own work, built for the contest

4. Team entries and Multiple entries are permitted.
5. Again, Deadline October 31st, with some leeway if you guys need a little extra time.

Prizes
Since it's pretty short notice, I'll offer a real-spoooky prize kitty:

Silver: $25 Steam games
Bronze: $10 Steam games
Winners will also get commemorative profile trophies. Everyone else will receive lovingly-crafted participation medals.[/i]

**Everyone should also kindly observe the judging handicap to Australians, since apparently they don't celebrate Halloween?! ;(

I'd say I'll make something for this, but I said that about the other ones. Yeah.
Besides, the next handful of weeks are going to be a living hell for me, so I'll have to hold off before I give a verdict there.

I'd LOVE to make a HH too zeeba, but there's no way I'll have enough time. Considering your Compo 28 map, you'd be really good at it

Instead, I think I'm going to make a modular prefab pack of something or other..

When I map un orthogonal architecture in hammer it looks like a kitteh threw up in a shoe box. Can I make a 3d model in Rhinoceros 5.0 with renderings? Maybe then I can make a map from it. I'll post a ugly wip. laterz. Just had thrown something together during some free time at work.

I give up trying to map this as i'm getting all kinds of errors on such simple geometry. I could circumvent it if I wanted to but don't have the time.

I wonder if I could make a model of an entire map, import it into hammer and clip the brush work. I'm sure this is how modern levels are made.

Well it looks awesome anyway Zeeba! What kinds of errors are you getting?

Try using sledge for your GoldSrc maps, if you haven't already. It has MANY advantages over hammer in brush creation, particularly new brush primitives, and 3D clipping!

Sledge's compile utility also automatically accounts for floating-point vertices by default(avoids the pain of setting up hlfix). My only caution would be to avoid using visgroups unless PB fixed the problem with hidden groups becoming invisible and unselectable (when you close sledge with any groups hidden)

Do it! have you imported Rhino models into hammer before? I'm guessing you could import into Max and export from there?

Zeeba: If there are at least 5 people with WIPs who plan to finish, and you can all agree on a revised deadline, I'd be happy to extend it another week or so

Otherwise, Prizes will be awarded according to community voting, and what was uploaded to the TWHL Map Vault, by October 31st(with a day or so of leeway to account for different timezones).

Don't worry if your entry is not a map, submit any finished work to "Completed Maps", and anything else to the "Unfinished Stuff" section.

Yeah it will be animated. Modeling is mostly done, but I need time to paint and rig it. I'll probably not get it in on time unless you're judging on the merit of potential here.

SO, Zeeba and Rim have expressed wanting an extension for this. Does anyone else out there have a WIP for this and could use more time(y/n)?

If y, I will add another week or so to the deadline, if that's enough time for everybody?

Please pay attention to the second part of rule #2, no recycled work is allowed: your entry must be "built for the contest". So I must ask, did you start your map before the 14th?
I have no way to verify this one way or the other, but I will make a judgement call after looking at your map.

nah people do that stuff around here, we had a Halloween day at work even... It just takes us a few years to catch up with the American cliches

I was going to make a serious entry, but what with what happened on Monday I wasn't able to finish.

Since I was left with a few finished resources, and a load more unfinished (including a new skeleton model - that pic I linked was a super high-poly one I was using for texture baking), I decided to make this with what I had finished.

I wouldn't say Halloween is an American cliche, just a derivative from the Day of the Dead. Though all of our holidays are kinda like that. Easter, Christmas, and Halloween have been hallmarked into a politically correct neutral so everyone can celebrate it and no one will get upset.

I should probably mention that the skeleton model in the map is from vanilla HL, I didn't get mine finished. I hadn't wanted to use that one because neither of the animations fitted what I wanted to do. Part of mine is visible in the painting though.

I can't remember specifically how I worded the readme, but I may have accidentally implied that literally everything in the map is custom. I meant that the stuff in the map that is custom is made by me except where otherwise noted. I shall fix it later when I am at my computer.
